Story
Tricked into a world of banished gods, demons, goblins, sprites and magic, Richter must learn to meet the perils of The Land and begin to forge his own kingdom. Actions have consequences across The Land, with powerful creatures and factions now hell-bent on Richter's destruction. Can Richter forge allegiances to survive this harsh and unforgiving world or will he fall to the dark denizens of this ancient and unforgiving realm? Story
An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Story
An existence spent being forced to kill others to satiate a Monster. Where the only thing to look forward to was the blessed, if brief, period of time between paying that bribe. Except that very same Monster is and isn’t Rene. It just happened to live inside his own mind and force him to do what it wanted. Rather than being an actual Monster. That was Rene’s entire life until a fateful day changed that. A day that the career as a hitman for hire built on the Monster’s needs will end. Where Rene will be forced to atone for his actions. To be held accountable and judged.

Elves were supposed to be gone, defeated in the great war. Magic is practiced behind closed doors, and only by the elites. All I was trying to do was survive, maybe with a bit more curiosity about my master's magic than I should've allowed. He caught me snooping, and sent me on a quest to steal a magic scroll. A quest that would change my life.

great novella in a promising new series!
4.5 stars
I should start by saying that novellas can be hit or miss for me because it always takes me time to get into the rhythm of the story, and by the time I start to become invested, the story is over. With this one, it took me half the short story to figure out what was going on, but the ending was really great! So because it was short, I went back and listened to the whole thing a second time and I enjoyed it even more. As short as it is, I really like the main character and I am hopeful that because this is listed as book #1 of the Nyepsium Wars, that it is just the prelude of many stories to come. This is the 4th series/universe of stories I've visited with this author and falls in the top two, next to Finneas Grey. But I've only read one book in the Mermaid Academy series and suspect I could easily be drawn back into that universe. Suffice it to say that I think Trevor Darby is a great middle school/teen author, and I love the variety of settings that he creates. Because of the minor fighting/death, I would recommend this for older kids (14-16?), but it's not any more gruesome than Percy Jackson. I will definitely be happy to read more books in this universe! The only reason I didn't round up is that it's a short story and I had to read it twice to get the full impact of the story. That may just be me and not others, though. I really enjoyed the narrator with this one.
Special thanks to the author for this copy of the audiobook. It did not affect my rating of the story. I just really enjoy his writing and think that some of my students would enjoy it as well!

A well-written story from a good author
An Assassin's Tool (The Nyepsium Wars,#1), my first read/listen from author Trevor Darby. An author that's new, to me, in this short (36-minute) the story-line story-line quickly gets better & better drawing the reader deeper & deeper. Narrator Jarret Lemaster’s narration adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I have to admit to speeding up the playback the story was so enthralling. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I’ll be reading more from this author and in this series as soon as I get the books. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Explosive Beginning!
Great beginning to a new series and I highly recommend it. Trevor Darby's books just keep getting better and better with each succeeding book that I have the privilege of hearing. My only complaint is the book was too short and it left me wanting more. Jarret Lemaster does an awesome job with the narration and I could listen to more from him. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
