Publisher's summary

Psychotherapist Josh Fletcher takes us on a tour of the inner mind of a therapist—revealing a hilariously candid point of view on the therapeutic process, a practical guide to therapy, and maybe a few more cobwebs and dark corners than one might expect. It’s everything you ever wanted to know about therapy (and maybe a few things you didn’t).

Trauma, heartbreak, anxiety, and mourning are all parts of the human experience, and Josh Fletcher’s mission in life is to normalize the need to find a trusted professional with whom you can discuss all of life’s scariest aspects. Through the lens of four of his patients—Daphne, a wildly successful actor who still struggles to find contentment; Levi, an intimidating bouncer with obsessive tendencies who’s trapped in a sex cult; Zahra, an anxious, people-pleasing doctor in the midst of unpacking serious trauma; and Noah, a shy newcomer with some major closet skeletons—you’ll share in their self-discovery and recovery as they untangle themselves from an all-too-familiar web of emotions. In between sessions, Fletcher struggles to balance his own well-being with that of his patients as details from his sometimes messy but always heartfelt personal life reveal that therapists aren’t immune to getting tripped up by the same hurdles as the rest of us.

And How Does That Make You Feel? is a primer on what to expect from therapy, how to find the right therapist, and the most common afflictions treated in therapy (such as depression, OCD, and panic attacks) as well as a darkly hilarious narrative about what’s going on in your therapist’s mind before, during, and after your session. Above all, it’s filled with the promise that a better future is always possible . . . if we’re willing to seek help and do the work.

Recommendation 5⭐️

A follower of mine recommended this book after I had multiple panic attacks that led me to an emergency room visit. It was exactly what I needed at that time. Josh is the first person/ author that I have listened to/ read that actually described how I felt in words. So many things I have thought to myself, but couldn’t get out, made me not feel so alone. An incredible story. An incredible author! Highly recommend!

Binge read this title (actually listened)

Manchester, England sets the scene for a warts and all reveal of an authentic therapist’s professional and personal life. Loved the author’s sense of humor and ability to interlace story with information. Useful for any future interactions I might have with a therapist.

The raw, unfiltered and beautiful truth about therapy.

I absolutely LOVE this book. From someone that has gone through therapy for my own mental ailments, it is beautiful to see the truth from a therapists perspective. It is also comforting to see client reactions and behavior as I have been there myself. Joshua is a knowledgeable, empathetic person. Thankful to have listened to this book about his experiences. He shares parts of himself that make me look at therapy as more genuine and “ok” and less of a weakness. Thank you for this!

A view into the therapy room

I really enjoyed this book. The stories are engaging, and as an aspiring therapist, I appreciated the view from the other side. I also now identify the critic voice in my head. Highly recommend!

A new perspective on therapy and therapist! A must read/listen

I binged this book in a day & I don’t binge therapy books. Josh’s wonderfully unique style of sharing the experiences of being a therapist, inner thoughts, feelings, emotions was refreshing to me. The honesty is greatly appreciated. His sharing of helpful tools, seeking guidance through qualified therapists with proper education is important. The difference of therapists in type of method practice to finding one we feel comfortable with, safe. He also gives important insights I’d not thought about for my life experience.
His voice is calming. Great narration !
I enjoyed his humor very much. This book made me laugh through understanding, cry from losses we fall face in life. It’s a wonderful book. I also have it in hard copy. It’s definitely worth listening to for many reasons! Finally, I truly appreciated Josh sharing his humanity, vulnerability that we all have, live through with openness and courage.

Excellent Read

Mr. Fletcher does an outstanding job by letting the reader know what goes through the mind of a professional in the life of a clinical therapist. It starts off strong and keeps you engaged throughout. All the emotions are displayed here, which makes this such an enjoyable listen.

Crutched this in under 48 hours.

I listened to the whole audiobook in less than two days. I loved it. As someone who's been dealing with disordered anxiety on and off for most of her adult life, and is finally in the process of seeking therapy, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. Josh's stories about his clients were fascinating. It's really interesting to step inside the mind of a therapist.

Phenomenal

I REALLY loved this book. Joshua is hilarious, smart, witty, honest even in messiness, and an overall great clinician. I related to his, at times, spazzy internal dialogue where you get to hear what runs through his head within his interactions with his clients. I loved representing of what happens interpersonally at times for clinicians. This book at times had me laughing and other times crying. I cannot recommend it enough. And if you are a lover of audiobooks, this was the best. Joshua’s personality shined through and was so much fun to listen to.

Deeply human and sincere

I started to listen to audiobooks because I thought that hearing someone read you there own story, fictitious or autobiographic, is such a wonderful experience. This book is one of many that fed my love of audiobook. What a punch a vulnerability. I went from snorting while shopping to sobbing into the shower along with the stories. Joshua and everyone in this books is why I love my fellow humans 🤍
