About this listen

Featured title on PBS's The Great American Read in 2018

Eleven-year-old orphan Anne Shirley has just arrived at Green Gables, and already her guardians want to send her back. First, she's not the boy the Cuthberts expected. Second, she talks too much. And even with her generous spirit, the redhead's a trouble magnet. She gets the neighbor drunk and nearly poisons the pastor!

Still, despite a rocky start, the fiery Anne wins over her guardians and her new community. She enjoys life at Green Gables, excels in school, and earns a coveted scholarship. But when tragedy hits, Anne must choose between her dreams and the only home she's ever known.

In this beloved coming-of-age story, Lucy Maud Montgomery drew from her own experiences growing up in Canada during the 19th century to introduce generations of readers and listeners to one of literature's most original and inspiring characters.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to read a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

Just the perfect read with the perfect narrator

I'd never read the original book before. It has been on my books shelf for a few years now...but when I discovered that Julia Whelan, one of my all times favorite narrators, performed the narration of this classic I had to get it and finally listening to that, and I'm so glad I did because this was simply perfect!

The perfect story narrated by the perfect narrator.

I really hope Amazon will get Julia Whelan as the narrator for the entire series of these Anne's books.

I'll surely buy the whole package with Ms. J. Whelan as the performer.

Lovely Story

I read this as an adolescent, absolutely loved the Megan Follows video production series in the 1980s, and enjoyed the recent Netflix version. It was a real joy to read/listen to the story again years later. Julia Whelan’s narration is terrific. I was so impressed that her voice for Anne matured gradually from the beginning until the end. And her voice for Marilla resembled Colleen Dewhurst’s from the 80s series.

Love Letter from an AWAE Fan 🥕👒

My 1st voluntary audiobook experience and by means of a free trial! I am a wholehearted kindred spirit indeed. Oh, how I adored…”adore” doesn’t even suffice to express how wonderful this classic was to listen to, especially finally getting around to venturing into the first novel that was the literary piece of inspiration for being adapted into my favorite show ever “Anne with an E.” It may have gotten its 4th season cancelled back in 2020, but fiddlesticks to that. I can do well with the knowledge that the whole of many characters’ storylines in this comfort historical fiction universe continues on with earnest, heartfelt means! Much love to continue this book series in my leisure time. While the show and novel differed in many aspects, the soul of the story was similarly captured in both and I love both immensely for that. Anne’s nonstop monologues captured the overthinking shrill of excitement and worry one can relate to experience in their tween/teen-hood and despite today being different than 19th century Canada, this is a splendid coming-of-age story that anyone from any age demographic should not miss out on. An entertaining read through and through. 🥕👒

Brilliant book, phenomenal performance!

This book fills the reader with hope for life despite of the circumstances that may be faced along the way. It certainly became one of my favorites. Anne Shirley is a force of nature, and Julia Whelan's performance made her even more compelling and captivating! I certainly want to download every book narrated by Whelan now!

Get this book! you won't regret it, even if you're read it many times before!

A classic

It was fun listening to the story of a young orphan that was both imaginative and caring in spite of her origin or the mix up in her placement with the adoptive family sight unseen. She develops friendships and rivalries that change into friendships and gives love and laughter to some older people who have lacked joy for too long.
