About this listen

Destruction.

In a family of healers who save, all I do is destroy. My enforced solitude is for my own safety as well as that of the world, or so my mother tells me.

When the boy next door beckons, I can't help but sneak out to forge a friendship with him. Loneliness leads me to defy my family, but desperation prevails when I discover that the grounds of his private academy hold a secret that could help me learn why my ability is so disastrous...or push me to create a catastrophe that will bring about my family's deaths.

Merith Leigh has decided to give herself the best 16th birthday present ever: Freedom. She's spent the last two years in silent communication with Taran, the boy next door, and his encouragement to meet him beyond their bedroom window views has tempted her to finally break free of her family's bonds. With a leap of faith, she trusts Taran with her dark secret, and he takes her to meet his friends at his private academy, where a secret society that studies magic lurks with secrets of their own. Can Taran and his classmates help her discover why she carries the gift of destruction, rather than her family's skill at healing, or will their association prove deadly?

Well done

A story of healers, and Merith didn’t fit in. with there world of magic.
Her world is only with sign language and the boy next door. Till she escape this prison of isolation her family gave her. A new school and new friends, and secrets...Will she uncover why her’s is destructive. Interesting story.. Given audio for my voluntary review

Good work!

The story was great for YA fiction. It’s a good initiation for fantasy fiction. My only real suggestion would be to work on the choice of narrator. Book 1 was very robotic but by the end of book 3 the voice flowed better. I wouldn’t allow the voice narration to detract from the story though. Overall I would recommend.

ok

this one wasn't for me, but I think a lot of younger YA lovers who enjoy academy novels though would have fun with this box set.

Academy Lovers… This one is for you.

Academy lovers this one is for you. I truly enjoyed listening to Merith’s story. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next the story would veer in a new direction. I generally do audio books in the car but found myself turning this book on often even at home. Younger YA listeners would love this story as well.

Has potential

So this story was a really slow one to get into. It has potential. There are a lot of areas which could have been skipped while there are others where more elaboration would have been helpful.

As for the narration this was a hard one to listen to. The range just wasn’t there to cover all the parts and every time a new chapter would start I would jump with this upbeat, loud cheery voice saying “chapter 1” and so on. It reminded me of a voice on a kids program or game.

Not sure if this would have been better to read the old fashion way (with a book) or not. I guess I would say the story was decent but the audio version was hard.

Enjoyable series with strong female lead

Once beloved by her family, Merith is now ostracized by her family when her magic becomes destructive rather then healing. Taren, her friend from across the fence, helps her escape from her isolated existence. When he takes her to Arda Academy, she learns, from her newfound friends, how to control her magic. Once her family finds out, they are determined to get her back at all costs.

Follow Merith and her friends.

A wonderful Y/A series.

Reviewer: Teresa Fallen Angel

Summary:
Before Merith came into her powers her aunts and grandmother loved her. But when her inability to perform any of their spells without destructive things happened things changed for the worse. Never being allowed to leave, go to school or any outside contact left her at her cruel families mercy. That is until a boy, Teran, moved in net door. The two found limited ways to interact until Merith learned her family was sending her away. Escape plans were made with Teran taking Merith to Arda Academy under the guise of possibly entering the school. Now on the surface Arda Academy seemed to be just an elite school, but there is more under the surface than meets the eye.

Merith’s journey is about to begin when she learns that not only does she have more family, but that her aunts have been hiding things form her. The journey to find her future is filled with suspense, danger and maybe even love.

This was an incredible audio-book series.

Great book

This is a great academy book for teens to get into this genre. Story flowed very well and keep me listening to the very end.

Private Magical School

Although this book wasn't fantastic it isn't something I would scoff at either. This story follows a few students who are linked in a crazy world of magic. There are students who are not what they seem. The school is a magical adventurue. I just personally couldn't get into the book and struggled. I can tell the story is there just on the audio front it was rough. This has 3 books narrated by other people . I think especially for the male role at least using a male voice actor would of been more enjoyable but even for the first the narrator had me constantly losing interest. I am a huge fan of Academy books just this one did not do it for me.

Great Trilogy

So all books I hated Claire. Great way of capturing the entirety of a character. Interesting story line, with full character depths explored.
