The power of the element bonds flows through the lands of Terndahl. Shapers can control that power and use it.
With the threat of rogue elementals escaping from the element bond and fear of another attack by the Draasin Lord, life at the edge of Terndahl is difficult for Tolan. Without any magic of his own, he spends his days working a menial job as a carpenter’s apprentice. When an elemental attack draws the attention of the Inquisitors from the Academy, everything changes.
A mistake brings Tolan into the Terenhall Academy, a prestigious training ground for powerful shapers, but it’s a world where he doesn’t belong. Unlike his classmates, he can’t control the magic of the element bonds.
With no shaping ability, Tolan must find the fire within himself to succeed. If he can't, he'll not only be forced to leave the Academy, but the dangerous Draasin Lord might gain the very power he's long sought.
This box set contains the first three books of the best-selling Elemental Academy series:
- The Fire Within
- The Earth Awakens
- The Water Ruptures

A pleasant surprise

The MC starts a bit daft, as is totally normal, but over three full books worth of writing, he stays almost as daft as he started. He doesn't grow as a character. It's like he exists in a parallel timeline where the plot never happened and he's still on day one of his journey. He will lie about something in book 1 for little reason, and then still be lying about it 30 hours later. He doesn't openly discuss anything with anyone ever.
Slow or stupid MCs don't bother me. He just never changes or grows. It's frustrating. And it's such a good book apart from this serious flaw. Give it a shot! It's worth the price of admission. The first book you won't even be mad at the MC. It's not until he's the same in book3 that I just stopped caring about him.
Well written, well performed, but MC never changes

It is clear from pretty much the very beginning that the MC is special, but doesn’t fall into the mold of the typical student. Because of this, the MC constantly belittles himself into believing he’s doesn’t belong, all the while not being taught in any helpful manner.
This would have made for an enjoyable story if the MC could have followed his own path all the while trying to fit in. But that was totally thrown out the window thanks to his “friends.”
Anytime the MC was on a path to self discovery of what he is capable of, his oh so helpful friends either A: says what he’s doing/saying is impossible, B: says he is overthinking things, or C: says the MC’s thinking couldn’t possibly be outside the purview of the masters’ knowledge and understanding even though it is stated time and time again that much of the knowledge of how the ancient (elemental) shapers operated was lost to time.
I am next to certain that if the MC was left alone to his own devices, he could have discovered so much more about himself in a much shorter time period.
I won’t say I don’t recommend these books, because I like the MC, I like the main story line and where it’s heading and I like the overall setting of the books. I just wish that the author made the MC’s friends more helpful and open minded of him rather than; me wishing every time the MC talks to them to just leave them out of his life.
I personally will be continuing with this series because I really enjoyed the last couple of hours of the audio book, and am hopeful for where it leads, but am truly disappointed with how little of the first three books I actually enjoyed.
Good story, but frustrating characters.
