About this listen

With just one step, 16-year-old Alex Jennings' world changes - literally.

Dreading her first day at a new school, Alex is stunned when she walks through a doorway and finds herself stranded in Medora, a fantasy world full of impossibilities.

Desperate to return home, she learns that only Professor Marselle can help her...but he's missing. While waiting for him to reappear, Alex attends Akarnae Academy, Medora's boarding school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts. She soon starts to enjoy her bizarre new world and the friends who embrace her as one of their own, but strange things are happening at Akarnae, and Alex can't ignore her fear that something unexpected...something sinister...is looming.

An unwilling pawn in a deadly game, Alex's shoulders bear the crushing weight of an entire race's survival. Only she can save the Medorans, but what if doing so prevents her from ever returning home?

Will Alex risk her entire world - and maybe even her life - to save Medora?

I enjoyed the fast paced introduction to the world. there is a lot of so mystery as the MC explores and is introduced to different scenarios. enjoyed the characters' personalities and banter. school in books can get tedious but this was well articulated.

great start to a great series

TRIGGER WARNING: MANY OLDER MEN IN THIS BOOK HIT ON THE UNDERAGED FEMALE MAIN CHARACTER AND EVERYONE ACTS LIKE IT'S NORMAL. It's actually pretty gross. This book is aggressively hetero normative and really leans into gender roles, which is all kind of wrapped up together unfortunately.

Fun story, other than that. I love the "It's technology, not magic" angle. I spent a lot of time yelling at various characters. The tropes I found frustrating: main character who lucks into things and acts by intuition, getting everything right even though they have no idea what they're doing; teachers with no oversight who can torture students; teachers with no oversight who can decide not to teach students. The main character literally sits out one of the classes first term because the teacher tells her "Not my problem" and refuses to teach her. I'm actually kind of still rankled by that.

Which is a great sign, counter intuitively. I'm invested enough in the book to still be bothered by a character's behavior waaay down the line.

Fun, in a yell at the characters kinda way

I started and stopped this book several times not sure if I wanted to listen to or about teenagers. However to my amazement I really Loved this read and Wow it surprised me. I loved that I could not figure out what happened next after each twist. I have read so many that I can become board because I can see the plots and this one kept my ears perked for the next sentence. Going to listen to the next book in the series. GIVE IT A TRY but stay through the first chapter to become involved you won’t be disappointed.

surprised 👏

So I write this after listening to the whole series…twice. I came to love this series SO much after finishing it, I wasn’t ready to let it go so I immediately started from the beginning again. Also, experiencing the whole series again with foreknowledge let’s you catch all the little things you couldn’t possibly have known before!

That being said, I will say Akarnae is a little bit slower compared to the other books but that’s due to world building and honestly, the second time around I just loved it even more!

The first time listening to it, I didn’t love the way some characters were portrayed speaking. It almost sounded bratty/condescending? However, the second time around I didn’t feel that way so either I got used to it or listening to the rest of the series changed my perception.

All in all, I would recommend especially because the rest of the series just gets better and better!

Now one of my favorite series!
