About this listen

At Bertram’s Hotel the intrepid Miss Marple, on holiday in London, must solve a deadly mystery at the end of a chain of very violent events.

An old-fashioned London hotel is not quite as reputable as it makes out to be.…

When Miss Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she’s looking for at Bertram’s Hotel: traditional decor, impeccable service, and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly-polished veneer.

Yet, not even Miss Marple can foresee the violent chain of events set in motion when an eccentric guest makes his way to the airport on the wrong day.…

Mrs. Christie pulls the rug out from under the reader once again but with plenty of warning as to what's up in the story. The reader is lead to believe the story is about a specific set of characters, but finds out that there's more to it than that.

I've read At Bertram's Hotel many times but I still like listening to it to see not only whodunnit, but how She dunnit.

Period charm, with a twist

Really takes one back to better days.

What made the experience of listening to At Bertram's Hotel the most enjoyable?

This is just one of my favorite Agatha Christie's. It has everything that makes her books so enjoyable, the wonderful eccentric British characters, the astute character observations, a well plotted story. There's a reason why her books have stood the test of time. In this case, Stephanie Cole does a marvelous job of bringing Miss Marple to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I just adore Miss Marple. Something about this little old lady no one pays attention to, but she's so astute, a much better observer than all the "smarter" people around her.

Have you listened to any of Stephanie Cole’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've enjoyed Stephanie Cole's performances before, but this was the first time I've listened to her read, and it was wonderful. She brought all the characters to life, but more importantly it was a well-paced reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the various police authorities have gathered with Miss Marple in the hotel and she keeps pulling rabbits out of the hat, surprising them with all the things she's noticed and discovered about the various guests and hotel employees.

One of my favorites

I was incredibly surprised at how little Miss Marple actually had to do with this story. She almost seems to be an unnecessary character.

Miss Marple?

Miss Marple has been offered a trip to the seashore by her niece, the famous artist Joan West, but Miss Marple decides she would much rather go to London and stay at the hotel where she stayed as a child in Agatha Christie’s At Bertram’s Hotel. There she is thrilled to discover that the hotel has not changed at all since she was a little girl. Or at least that is what she thinks at first. But time makes her begin to notice little things that just don’t add up.

This off-beat book is hard to summarize without giving away any spoilers. So it’s tricky to write a good review. The book changes points of view several times, from Miss Marple to the police inspector to the absent-minded Canon Pennyfather and to the infamous Bess Sedgewick and her more devious but vanilla daughter. The book is curiously enjoyable despite its not following a typical linear story.

Stephanie Cole performs the audio edition of this book. With a clear performance, Cole brings the book to life and uses strong voices for each of the many characters.

At Bertram’s Hotel was the second Miss Marple book and third Agatha Christie book I ever read, not the best introduction to the works of Christie. But once you get a stronger sense of Christie’s writing, you may be intrigued by the off-beat sense of this book to appreciate the Queen of Crime’s depths. I give the book four stars.
