About this listen

"Attachments is so perfectly engaging, so sly, and so funny I read it all in one sitting, then went back and read my favorite scenes a second time.... I hope Rowell never stops writing." (Haven Kimmel)

Beth and Jennifer know their company monitors their office email. But the women still spend all day sending each other messages, gossiping about their coworkers at the newspaper and baring their personal lives like an open book. Jennifer tells Beth everything she can't seem to tell her husband about her anxieties over starting a family. And Beth tells Jennifer everything, period.

When Lincoln applied to be an internet security officer, he hardly imagined he'd be sifting through other people's inboxes like some sort of electronic Peeping Tom. Lincoln is supposed to turn people in for misusing company email, but he can't quite bring himself to crack down on Beth and Jennifer. He can't help but be entertained - and captivated - by their stories.

But by the time Lincoln realizes he's falling for Beth, it's way too late for him to ever introduce himself. What would he say to her? "Hi, I'm the guy who reads your email, and also, I love you." After a series of close encounters and missed connections, Lincoln decides it's time to muster the courage to follow his heart...even if he can't see exactly where it's leading him.

Written with whip-smart precision and charm, Attachments is a strikingly clever and deeply romantic debut about falling in love with the person who makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Even if it's someone you've never met.

Critic reviews

"Rainbow Rowell lights up the sky with this sparkling debut novel. Attachments is fresh, fun and charmingly quirky." (Claire Cook)

Let’s get down to business

Based purely on the amount of time I spend buried in emails every day, this story’s premise alone was enough to get me hooked. Laura Hamilton’s delivery adds just the right note to the charming (and often hilarious) eccentricities of Beth and Jennifer’s email correspondence in this pre-Y2K workplace romance. Throw in a nerdy and introverted IT guy tasked with monitoring employee’s work emails and you’ve got a funny, feel-good story that just feels natural. And while Lincoln and Beth don’t actually meet until the story’s halfway point, it doesn’t take long to get caught up in the lives of each and every one of Rowell’s characters. I do love a good slow burn, after all. The fun is all in the journey. —Michael C., Audible Editor

It follows a guy named Lincoln (who works as a sort of web security guard) as he reads the emails between two coworkers and all the shenanigans that follow. I'll admit it was kinda difficult at times to tell which girl was talking when he was reading the emails but honestly it didn't bother me that much. The narrator, Rebecca Lowman, was excellent. I'd definitely listen to more of her work. Same of the author, Rainbow Rowell! I won't spoil anything but I was quite pleased with the ending as well.

Great read!

I first started to listen to this feature because we share the same last name. I love the Journey Rainbow takes the reader on to find love. The story shows a belief that love never fails and when you find love...cherish it! Thanks DYANN Rowell

Love the journey

I’ve loved this book for a long time, and love Rebecca Lowman’s performance as always. Rainbow Rowell has a wonderful way of telling a story that’ll suck you all the way into it, leaving you unable to stop listening/reading until it’s all the way over. Ms. Lowman takes Rowell’s characters and makes them even more real :)

the best!

I don’t know what I expected when I started this audiobook, but this book was so much more than whatever it was. I was hooked not only on the story, but on the depth of the writing. How the Beth, Jennifer, and Lincoln speak about life and love; how it becomes deep and multidimensional instead of flat. The love in this book is built. The love is friendship and romance. It knows quarks, sadness, ugly truths, and celebration. It was so satisfying to watch the story unfold that to be honest, I didn’t care how it ended.. the journey was enough. I loved the characters, I loved the story, and I’d read it again. You should read it.

A celebration of the ugly and beautiful parts of love
