Publisher's summary

River:

When I was 17 I made an unforgivable mistake.

My entire clan hates me even though I'm their alpha.

I was willing to live alone in the darkness until I saw him.

He is mine. Every fiber of my being tells me that.

The clan will object to their alpha being with both a human and a man.

I don't care. I will have what's mine.

Darius:

Everyone gets one great love. I've had mine.

She died.

Now all that's left for me is survival.

One day at a time. One breath at a time.

But why is it when I look at him I feel like I could love again?

I can't betray her memory....

But I also can't betray my heart.

This MM shifter romance can be heard as a stand-alone.

so much sadness but a hea

Parker was wise beyond his years, and I enjoyed seeing that aspect. I liked River's final decision when ge found out what his clan was really about . No one meeds that negativity and backward thinking. Archaic! I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator was good.

a good listen even if it kinda moved a little fast

I listened to it in one sitting didn't want to press pause. I liked the characters, especially Parker. while some of it didn't seem plausible just the way the story flowed overall it was a good fluffy happy story that I thoroughly enjoyed and will probably listen to again .I may even listen to the other stories in the series even though they aren't mm.

Second chances and finding where you belong

River and Darius are both sweet men. I thought this story had a gentle feel to it even with the bit of drama caused by River’s clan and even individual clan members. I felt bad that River had to deal with such a homophobic clan.
Darius who is human has a son, who I really liked, that is half bear. Though he isn't a bear shifter, Darius had shifter friends who tried to look out for him. Both men having to deal with their own set of problems and insecurities made them seem more real, especially Darius being a recovering alcoholic. I really liked both men and am happy they found each other. The story has a few emotional parts and I liked how Darius protects what is his.

Gary Bennett did a good job, he spoke clearly and at a nice pace, but I found it hard to know who was talking at times. There are a couple scenes where there are several people talking and I had to stop and go back to re-listen which took away from my enjoyment at those times. Overall though I did like Gary Bennett and would listen to him again.

Darius and River

River was the clan alpha, saw Darius and decided he was his, an instant connection. Darius lost his great love, who was a woman. When his love died, he fell apart drinking. Now he is in survival mode and doing better. He is falling for River but does not want to betray her memory. It was a shame when Darius' son was kidnapped and how he got hurt. This was a very well written MM romance.

Again, Gary Bennett did a very good job with the narration of all three books in the Bears of Southoak series. I received this free copy audiobook a my request and have voluntarily left this review.

My favorite of the series

Also available via KU.

This was a bit longer than the last two and I think it really gave Kayci Morgan the chance to craft an even better story. River is the alpha of his clan but hated for both being gay and having made a terrible mistake in his teens. Widowed Darius (whom we met in book 1) is getting his life back together for himself and his son, Parker. After the death of his wife, he struggled with alcoholism but has now been sober for a year. When River meets Darius he feels an instant connection.

I thought that this might be GFY-trope, but it's actually that Darius while knowing he was bi only ever loved his wife. I'll admit I'm a sucker for a precocious kid loved by all the adults in his life, so Parker was a great dynamic to Darius & River's relationship.

Gary Bennett has an intimate/cozy voice that was an excellent fit for the alternating POVs of the MCs. He did a good job with male & female voices as well as a wide range of emotions.

This is definitely my favorite of the series so far and a deal at under $5.

I loved this book.

I really enjoyed this book. It is my favorite of the series. I really loved how he saved Darius from the falling sign. They set up a date for them and later when he thought to tell his son he was seeing a man it was no big deal. They run into bigoted pack issues and Darius wanting to make sure his deceased wife wasn't just forgotten about. It is a sweet love and the boy just makes it better. It can be read as a but and the narrator does a great job telling the story. #AudiobookObsessionReviewer 🎧

Enjoyable listen.

This is a great listen. River and Darius's story is sweet and I enjoy listening about their story. I definitely couldn't stop listening to this story. We have some suspense and drama that definitely kept me interested into this story. I also love how River is with Parker. Then Gary Bennett did a great job with this story. Made me really get into the story.

🎧Audiobook Obsession 🎧

I enjoyed listening to River and Darius finding each other and falling in love despite the many obstacles in their way. I don't know how River survived in his clan for so long with how they treated him. He's the alpha, but he has such a kind a gentleness about him. Darius is still grieving for his wife and a recovering alcoholic. Charming and sexy, stronger than he knows.I especially loved when during his grief, River shifted to his bear and tried to scare Darius, who instead of running away in fear, embrace his mate and comfort him. River's clan is irredeemable and reprehensible, except for River, Kiera is the only thing good there. I'm happy River and Darius got their HEA. Gary Bennett is a first time Narrator and he was ok, nice pacing throughout, but it was hard at times to differentiate the character voices.
