About this listen

After a botched raid in Afghanistan, ex-army specialist Michel Deverroux returned to Galveston, Texas, with more baggage than intended. Without family, friends, or money, Michel turned to drugs to relieve the horrors of war. He knew it was a dark path, but he saw no other choice. Michel was awash in a world of numbness and addiction until his estranged uncle Andy died, leaving Michel a rundown beach front home and a hefty inheritance.

With something to finally call his own in the world, a spark of hope returns to Michel's life - a spark that is ignited when he sees a somber yet beautiful woman walking along the beach. Michel falls instantly in love with her and nicknames her his "Mermaid". Now, determined to be a man that his new love would want to be with, Michel vows to turn his life around and win over his "Mermaid", Annabelle. Overcoming the shadows of his past seems nearly impossible, but the drive to have Annabelle gives Michel the motivation to overcome his demons.

Loved it!

This book was a romance but it was also about redemption. There were no bad guys lurking in the background with plans for nefarious deeds. It was simply humans being humans and dealing with the consequences. Life.

Michael, the bad boy in question, was worthy and in need of redemption. He got it with Annabelle, his insta-attraction. She too was in need of redemption. They found each other and this incredibly sweet story, even with its dark undertones, gave birth to a very happy ending. Loved it.

DC Cole, who is fast becoming one of my favorite narrators, delivered in his usual swoon-worthy fashion. All in all, a great listen.

Holy Hotness, DC Cole is outstanding

First I must give props to a new to me narrator DC Cole, how have I not listened to him before? Seriously, i'm am going to be searching out more books he's narrated.

This is a quick listen, perfect for an afternoon which I appreciated since i'd just completed a 20+ hour book and I needed a change of pace. This is a story of a broken hero suffering with PTSD and addiction in a post military life. The broken former solider finds healing in this quick listen.

Hero Review...

Decent story, strong male character. Little light on substance. Pretty good narration!

The perfect combination of heart and heat

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was so unexpectedly sweet - though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since Overhaul was also sweet too! I was a little hesitant about the story when I saw that the male lead (Michel) turned to drugs to deal with his PTSD and depression (I tend to stray away from anything that prominently features drug abuse), but it wasn't glorified or focused on too much and the proper message was delivered. Annabelle was a sweet female lead and it was beautiful watching her and Michel come together and grow as a couple and individuals. They both had rough pasts and issues that plagued them, but I really appreciated how they stuck together and communicated openly and honestly from beginning to end and let their difficulties bring them together instead of tearing them apart. The Heart of a Hero was the perfect mix of heart and heat and I look forward to reading more from Amber Burns. I enjoyed listening to the Audible version - the male narrator's voice was perfect (especially at 1.25x speed), but I did find it mildly awkward that it was told in first person POV from Michel and third person POV for Annabelle. Other than that, it was just a good book! I give it 4 out of 5 wine glasses.

Great story with romance and respect for veterans

I loved this story. It felt real. The story starts following veteran Michel who came home after a raid he was on went bad and he watched his best friend die. He ends up inheriting a beach home and meeting the first woman to really make him feel in a long time. Annabelle is still dealing from the man she loved breaking her heart and the death of her mother. She meets Michele and right away there is a spark. But they both have emotional issues and they need to overcome them to be happy together. This story was so beautiful. I felt it really showed the affect that loss takes on the soul. I loved how it showed what so many veterans really deal with when they come home. It also shows the true power of love. Instant love fans will love this story. I did! I hope in the future we get more Michel & Annabelle.

Short and simple

DC Cole does a great job narrating this one. I was expecting something different from this story from beginning chapters. But, it was a short, simple listen.

Gripping Story!

Amber Burns is an author who is new to me, while I have listened to several books performed by D.C. Cole. The narrator has a gravely voice that pulls one into the book. I loved the unexpected twists this story had. The narrator was able to put so much emotions into his performance. With the story being written from Michelle (? spelling of main male name) POV, I thought the narrator did an excellent POV. I loved how the author was able to pull two damaged people together and how love heals. This is a sexy standalone listen. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher, and or narrator.

Overcoming the past

Michel is trying to forget his rough childhood and the horrors of war. Annabelle is trying to get over a bad relationship.. There seems to be an instant chemistry between them but will their pasts pull them apart. I love how the author lets us see their relationship develop and especially how Annabelle reacts to his past. We also see how good and bad parenting affected these two characters. The narrator does an excellent job of portraying the emotions and desires of these characters. He creates both distinctive male and female voices. I asked to receive this Audible book and voluntarily wrote this unbiased review. I highly recommend this Audible book.

Great Romance and Well Performed

What made the experience of listening to The Heart of a Hero the most enjoyable?

The audio work is very well done, just allowing the listener to sink into the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Heart of a Hero?

I loved that the book delt with a soldier returning from war and moving on with PTSD, and finally getting a happy ending.

What does D. C. Cole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration gave the book a nice weight. The words are deep, but the added resonance is appreciated.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

After the war ends, the fight continues. This time there's a happy ending.

Any additional comments?

Great book with a lot of heart. I appreciated this book on its own merits, and am happy to leave this voluntary review to let others know what a great experience this has been. This is a review of a copy gifted to me.
