2023 Audie Award Winner for Best Short Stories/Collection Audiobook

On the New England coast, an irresistible vacation rental draws a woman into the sinister secrets of her past in a cunning short mystery with a gothic twist by a New York Times bestselling author.

Clea McAllister returns to the Newport haven of her childhood, a gilded mansion by the sea once owned by her beloved grandmother. Now she is a paying guest at her own ancestral home, and Clea’s vacation hides a darker intention: to confront the estate lawyer who stole her rightful inheritance. But wicked games are still being played at Belle Mer, and Clea uncovers more than she ever intended.

Belle Mer by Luanne Rice is part of Getaway, a collection of six stories about dream escapes that take unimaginable, even sinister, turns. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single sitting.

Good book, great ending!

This was another short story in a series of 6 audio books and by far my favorite. The suspense build was excellent and even in the short span of the book it had great character build. Great twists occurred often through to the very last scene.

Trust no one!

Better Than Okay

Belle Mer by Luanne Rice
50 pages Kindle story starts on 11
1h 21m narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya
Getaway Collection #4

Genre: Short Stories, Suspense

Featuring: Newport, Rhode Island; Grandma's House, Inn

Rating as a movie: R PG-13 with editing

Song for the soundtrack: "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven

My rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️¾

My thoughts: This story wasn't amazing or anything but for me it wss the best story in the collection so far. Still not 4 star material though so I'm rounding down. I was excited to find a real Inn with the same name and location.

Recommend to others?: Maybe. It's just better than okay.

Short and dark.

The story is very very short but it is very twisted. Really exciting read with and end that is unguessable.

Ending?

It should have been a foreshadowing of a full length novel. But for a novella it did set the stage for an inevitable conclusion.

Doesn’t begin to live up to Rice’s earlier works

I have read all of Luanne Rice’s novel. I have loved her stories for years. When I saw she had something new out I was anxious to read it. Turns out this was the dumbest story she has ever almost put together. I was extremely disappointed

Too Many Questions Unanswered

The who dun it concept was interesting & mysterious, the descriptions of the area were neat, and the narrator's French pronunciation was impressive. You expect for some things to be left to the imagination with a short story, but in this one things escalate so quickly, and there are far too many questions left totally unanswered that it isn't satisfying enough. Worth a listen for a couple dollars but be prepared to be left wanting much more at the end.

Brilliance at Home

I long for the ocean coast again. As a native of New England, I traded cash for a desert view but I still miss the open water and sea spray. Thank you for a wonderful tale which brought me home.

Short and sweet

Short mystery story of returning to her roots and finding treachery. Who should she trust?
