About this listen

2023 Audie Award Winner for Best Short Stories/Collection Audiobook

A quiet weekend in the wilderness, just the two of them. How romantic. But new love turns to terror in a suspenseful short story from the New York Times bestselling author of The Other Black Girl.

When Ama’s straitlaced boyfriend, Nathan, invites her to his secluded upstate New York cabin for the weekend, she can’t say no. It’s a chance for them to escape the city’s distractions, share intimate secrets, and take their relationship to a deeper level. By day, it feels like the perfect love story. But when Ama is awakened by strange events, she starts to wonder if she really wants to know everything about Nathan.

What??? Where’s the rest?!

Characters: good
Storyline: great
Cliffhanger: yes
Ending: no

I feel like I just read an essay by a student who ran out of time to finish the assignment

Interesting

This was an interesting and thought provoking super short listen. The narrator did great with a very clear speaking voice, and the descriptions throughout were very detailed. Some parts were spooky. The ending was not to my liking though.. far too abrupt. I literally said out loud, "What! That's it?"
Also, you'll have to be the judge of who is at fault in this one. I think a certain someone was too hasty in their conclusions.

Great narration but..

Overall the narration and way it was written was great. However it feels like there is something missing with vague parts. Not really my thing overall.

Great!

This book enticed me to keep reading. Knowing it was a short story, 50 pages, I didn’t expect much more, though I did want more.

Not my cuppa tea.

The narrative was excellent but the story was something young people would tell around a camp fire. The best I can say is it creeped me out.

Interesting

The book started with the ending, which was intriguing. I didn't really care for the storyline, but the reader's voice and the incredibly descriptive writing hooked me. Have to say I was glad when it ended though.

Cliff hanger

The storyline was great and captivating. The characters (Ama and Nathan) were welcoming. The only part of the book that I did not like was the end. I searched high and low to see if there was another book to continue the story. I was deeply saddened when I found out that this was the only book. I would love for the author to make a sequel so the readers can find out if Ama burned down the cabin!
