About this listen

When a plane crashes into the Antarctic ice, exposing a massive cave beneath, a rescue and research team is dispatched. Twenty-four hours later, all contact is lost. Captain Alex Hunter and his highly trained squad of commandos are fast tracked to the hot zone to find out what went wrong - and to follow up the detection of a vast underground reservoir. Accompanying the team is an assortment of researchers, including petrobiologist Aimee Weir. If the unidentified substance proves to be an energy source, every country in the world will want to know about it - some would even kill for it. Once inserted into the cave system, they don't find any survivors - not even a trace of their bodies. Primeval hieroglyphs hint at an ancient civilisation, and an ancient danger. Spectres of the dead haunt the tunnels. Within hours, one of the party will die. To bring his team out alive, Alex will need every one of his mysterious abilities beneath the dark ice.

Fiction but still thought provoking

What made the experience of listening to Beneath the Dark Ice the most enjoyable?

The constant suspense

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, you were always wondering when the sea creatures would show up.

What about Sean Mangan’s performance did you like?

He kept the story moving at a good pace

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

The fact of giant sea creatures gives this book a degree of plausibility while some of the traits of the sea creatures kept it in the fiction realm.

You Can't Lose With Greig Beck!

I have read 5 or 6 books in this series and love them all. If you like military leaders, honor, bravery, and secrets of our world -- archeological or otherwise -- you will enjoy these books.

Greig Beck is the best!!

Just okay

There's nothing new here, but that's okay. I blew through it in one listen on x2 speed. That worked for me.

Good story, irritating narration

I love these kinds of adventure tales. This series has such promise. I love the early James Rollins books, and this is similar.

The problem with this series is the narration. Sean Mangan has the diction of someone who is inebriated and who is trying to enunciate clearly and yet slurs at the same time. It's irritating. He also doesn't do a terribly good job of distinguishing between the particular characters. Alex Hunter sounds just like Amy.

I may or may not buy the next one in audiobook form. I may just get them all on Kindle.

Okay. Where is the follow up book?

What did you like best about Beneath the Dark Ice? What did you like least?

Integration of way back then and present day were done quite nicely. The plot was smooth with enough twists and turns to cause a reader to guess wrongly about what is about to happen. Too many correct guesses and my interest gets to be moot. Fool me and I will for certain stick with the book to its' conclusion. I did even though I got lost a couple of times. I wasn't even in the caves!

What did you like best about this story?

I just knew Monica was to be rescued! When I'm wrong too many times about a plot, the book is good or a humdinger. It's like a tv program where most goings-on about a plot can be guessed correctly the first time around. If not, the program deserves to be watched to conclusion. Well, unless it's a B Movie! Monica being depicted as a pro spelunker, is a change. Most pro folks put into a spotlight are men. Yeah, it's refreshing to have a different perspective presented.

What does Sean Mangan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I wonder if the archeological information is accurate? How very interesting this data is. Most times I get bored with scientific gobbledygook, especially when presented with an asinine attitude.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, I wouldn't go to the movies and watch this. I don't do movies. But I'd catch it as soon as it hit tv. Or maybe even done a movie rental. Had I not done the book.

Any additional comments?

The narrator's method of issuing commands was like in a B Movie. Attitudes of senior military and scientist as presented by the narrator left quite a bit to be desired. It sort of reminded me of old Japanese movies, ie., Godzilla, the works. So, the the big ole monster or another of it's ilk escaped which means the parasites escaped as well and are cruising around off the coast of Australia. What is the result of that? What happened between Amy and Alex?

Intriquing plot, with the Beck twist.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This would make a great movie........... Adventure that takes place in Antarctica with an foreseen outcome. Expecting enemy forces, our armed force is faced with an ancient and unknown foe. Just when you believe it may work out for them, enters a new problem. > I have listened twice to this one.
