About this listen

Nineteen-year-old Evelyn has rarely strayed from her family's isolated estate - save for the occasional trip to Edinburgh, where her father, a respected magistrate, conducts his business. But when Evelyn's innocent friendship with a servant is misinterpreted by her father as an illicit union, Evelyn is whisked away to accompany her father on a trip to North America. For the final portion of that trip, Evelyn and her father go fishing in Canada, and Evelyn is surprised to discover that their guide is James Douglas, a former stable hand who disappeared from their estate five years ago on the night of a double murder. Now, far from the constraints of polite society, the truth about that day, James, and her father is revealed.

I really enjoyed reading the book. The narrator was great. Through her reading, each of the characters had a distinctive voice.

Good story, great narration

This is my 2nd Sarah Maine novel and it was just as good as the first. Maine presents a well developed plot and equally delicious characters, moving between what they perceive; what they feel; and what they believe. Set in wilderness of Canada in the 19th century.

Edge of my seat tale

If you’re one for bashing western civilization, you will enjoy the verbal flogging the author will constantly accost you with. Personally I’ll avoid this author because there are good things that came out of western civilization.

Didn’t care for the histrionic history rewrite
