About this listen

Imagine that you live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people's houses. You've known your neighbors for years and you trust them. Implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really? On a midsummer night, as a festive neighborhood party is taking place, preteen Pip discovers her 13-year-old sister Grace lying unconscious and bloody in a hidden corner of a lush rose garden. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

Might have been four stars, but this is my second Lisa Jewell book via audio. If I have to listen to another “kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss”, I might lose it. Other than that, a pretty good book.

I have read or listen to numerous books by this author, and I am constantly surprised by how much variety she can put into her work. No matter what, characters are real, the story is always good and believable. To me, this is one of the best of her work, I because she explores so many issues and so many people vividly. Please keep it up. I am a listener forever.

Lisa Jewell is amazing

I’m a big Lisa Jewell fan and this book was another success. I loved the environment that the book took place in and you could truly see it all playing out before your eyes. Characters were well thought through and the story was nicely paced. My absolute only complaint would be that I feel it ended somewhat abruptly. She tidied it all up, and everything was answered to, but it was just done in a “flater” way then I would have preferred. A great story, definitely worthy of the credit!

A secret garden filled with poisonous flowers.

I’ve listened to many Lisa Jewell stories and enjoy her writing style. This one kept me guessing to the end. Great book.

Jewel doesn’t disappoint

The book started slow but got better as the book went on. The way they jump from character to character was a bit hard to stick with and for confusing at points.

Slow at first

Great story, kind of like rosemarys baby meets lord of the flies… very good read

Great story

From a moral perspective the ending is a bit sweet. Can a 13 year old really make that kind of ultimate magnanimous decision? And do the adults in the room concur? I guess the earlier death was an Agatha Christie type red herring which has no resolution.

Good Story but Terrible Ending

A quick read but not really what I was expecting or impressed with. Overall it's a pretty depressing story about the worst things that happen when mental illness, undersupervised kids, and irresponsible parents turn blind eyes. Super predictable 'who done it' type of book.

Great Narration, Predictable Story

i really enjoyed this story. It was quaint, interesting, and very down to earth.
Easily you can fall in love with All the characters just like you have known them all along.
I just Loved the narration (and I'm picky)
Also not one boring piece, even though it was a story of what seems like Life happening and something happens that changes everyone's Lives in secret ways.
So well written that I visioned the gardens, patios , food almost every detail...wow Superb!!

intriguing
