About this listen

Miami attorney Jack Swyteck finds himself in the middle of an international legal battle over a Cuban oil spill that sets him on a deadly mission.

Three summers after the Deepwater Horizon environmental catastrophe, oil is spewing into the ocean again, this time from a drilling explosion in Cuban waters just 50 miles from the Florida Keys. The slick is headed straight for the United States, but the Cubans refuse American offers to assist with the cleanup, and threaten to fire on "hostile" U.S. vessels entering their waters. Backstopping the Cubans is the powerful consortium that owned and operated the rig, and is tied to the Chinese, Russian, and Venezuelan governments, who stonewall all inquiries and relief efforts.

Jack and his new wife, Andie Henning, an undercover agent for the FBI, are honeymooning in the Keys when Andie is called away on an assignment shrouded in secrecy. Jack, too, is soon back at work, representing an American woman whose Cuban husband was killed in the rig explosion. Though the spill occurred in foreign waters, Jack draws on all his legal know-how to file a wrongful death suit in a U.S. court and hopefully bring the young widow a semblance of closure.

Jack’s pursuit of the unimaginably complicated international case plunges him into a dangerous world filled with treacherous twists that lead him - and Andie - to the same shocking realization…that the looming environmental disaster may have been no "accident" at all.

A Love Story

Would you try another book from James Grippando and/or Jonathan Davis?

No from author, YES from Jonathan Davis, who reads Sandra Brown's Mean Streak. WOW, so I went looking for more mysteries read by him. This author is not for me...12 hrs is a long time to tell a story/mystery. This author's dialogue/material is too slow for me. I had to come back to this story 3 times to finish. I kept hoping it would pick up a faster pace. If you are a fan of this author, then this was a good listen. Hero, Jack and his trusted side kick, Theo have each other's back. I should have figured out the villain, but I had to muck through the unnecessary dialogue and was not glued to the plot clues until 5 mins before it was reveled.

Would you recommend Black Horizon to your friends? Why or why not?

This is not my genre. I am a core romance listener and purchased this book due to the reader who did a fab job of reading this book. J.D. narration did bring me back to finishing this book. I have downloaded Phillip Margolin's story, After Dark and it blew me away.

Which scene was your favorite?

the characters have so much potential and author does have them try to connect with listeners, but it just does not make it for me in 12 hrs!

Do you think Black Horizon needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

author needs to edit material and add more twist and turns or whatever picks up the pace. This read like a romance mystery.

Excellent legal thriller; almost 5 stars

James Grippando has been writing legal thrillers for more tan 20 years, yet this in only the second of his audiobooks I have listened to. The other one was Informant which rated 5 stars. Black Horizon is almost as good. It is Book 11 in the Jack Swyteck series. Swyteck is a lawyer newly married to an FBI agent, and he is also the son of the governor of Florida. Narration is by Jonathan Davis and it is superb. I definitely recommend Black Horizon.
