About this listen

The adventure that started in Wards of Faerie takes a thrilling new turn, in the second novel of New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks’ brand-new trilogy - The Dark Legacy of Shannara!

The quest for the long-lost Elfstones has drawn the leader of the Druid order and her followers into the hellish dimension known as the Forbidding, where the most dangerous creatures banished from the Four Lands are imprisoned. Now the hunt for the powerful talismans that can save their world has become a series of great challenges: a desperate search for kidnapped comrades, a relentless battle against unspeakable predators, and a grim race to escape the Forbidding alive. But though freedom is closer than they know, it may come at a terrifying price.

Back in the village of Arborlon, the mystical, sentient tree that maintains the barrier between the Four Lands and the Forbidding is dying. And with each passing day, as the breach between the two worlds grows larger, the threat of the evil eager to spill forth and wreak havoc grows more dire. The only hope lies with a young Druid, faced with a staggering choice: Cling to the life she cherishes or combat an army of darkness by making the ultimate sacrifice.

Critic reviews

"Terry Brooks has been my constant companion over a lifetime of exploring my beloved fantasy genre. I say with all honesty I would not be writing epic fantasy today if not for Shannara. If Tolkien is the grandfather of modern fantasy, Terry Brooks is its favorite uncle." (Peter V. Brett, New York Times best-selling author of The Daylight War)
"The Shannara books were among the first to really capture my imagination. My daydreams and therefore my stories will always owe a debt to Terry Brooks." (Brandon Mull, number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Beyonders and Fablehaven series)

If you like fantasy this is a must read series.

Where does Bloodfire Quest rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Terry Brooks is an amazing author, and his Shannara series is one of the best I have listen to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bloodfire Quest?

I can not say there was one memorable moment, because this book is in the middle of the series and well unlike some series where the story ends and the character go on, this is really just one big book they cut in to three. don't get me wrong it is good it is just the middle of the story.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I did not like the narration as much in this book as the others he has used in the past, but it did not take away form the book.

Any additional comments?

this book is not a romance at all. I say this because if you are looking at the rest of my library there is a lot of that there. This story is deep into magic and fantasy and to really understand it maybe you should start at the very beginning several books ago. They are all worth the read and Terry Brooks is great at developing strong characters and deep story lines that keep your interest every step of the way.

The narrator is horrible.

This book was very difficult to listen too as the narrator was horrible. The voices Rosalyn uses for most of the men sound like the voices actors use when they’re playing old men in Parliament talking down to some commoner. And she uses an old hag voice for too many women. She also acts out female characters as though they are weak and frail. Brooks has always had strong female characters. The way she makes them sound is like they’re on the verge of crying in any tough situation. I will think twice before I buy another audio book with her as the narrator.

Par for the course

Another middle book that sets up the finale for a decent ending. This book itself seems rushed though. The story seems to gloss over important battles/conflicts as if they're not significant, and has a tendency to leave you wanting more details. Overall though, it was a decent listen.
