About this listen

Homicide detective Adam Garrett is already a rising star in the Boston police department when he and his cynical partner, Carl Landauer, catch a horrifying case that could make their careers: the ritualistic murder of a wealthy college girl that appears to have satanic elements.

The partners make a quick arrest when all evidence points to another student, a troubled musician in a Goth band who was either dating or stalking the murdered girl.

But Garrett's case is turned upside down when beautiful, mysterious Tanith Cabarrus, a practicing witch from nearby Salem, walks into the homicide bureau and insists that the real perpetrator is still at large. Tanith claims to have had psychic visions that the killer has ritually sacrificed other teenagers in his attempts to summon a powerful, ancient demon.

All Garrett's beliefs about the nature of reality will be tested as he is forced to team up with a woman he is fiercely attracted to but cannot trust, in a race to uncover a psychotic killer before he strikes again.

I didn't want it to end

This is exactly the kind of story I have been looking for and honestly wish there were more of. Real life mystery with a bit of the supernatural thrown in. Half police procedural, half things that go bump in the night. Very worthy of a credit, in my honest opinion.

With R.C. Bray narrating you almost can't go wrong, but the authors writing style, which was well above par, only added to the package. This was the first listen in a long time to really hold my attention and left me wanting more (in a good way). I almost didn't want it to end.

#GreatOccultMystery!!

I wasn't sure I'd like this book but after reading the reviews I decided to give it a try and I'm very glad I did. #ModernDetective meets #PsychicWitch in this #ThrillingMystery. This book is a really good detective story and it has signs of the occult from the very beginning. When #HomicideDetectives Garrett and Landauer catch a case that seems to be a straight forward #Murder they are satisfied they have the right suspect. When a witch contacts them and tries to convince them that the murder is more #Sinister and #unbelievable. Garrett's beliefs are shaken when another body with the same #RitualisticSigns as the first. Tanith (the witch) convinces him she had psychic visions of someone summoning an #AncientDemon. Good book for those that like occult and mystery.

As usual narrator’s performance was wonderful

I have enjoyed all of his books, even though they are dark mysteries. This one was a little darker than most and several times I thought about stopping. I finished it and it is wrapped up in the end. I found myself only listening in the morning so I could get it completely out of my head by bedtime.

Excellent occult murder mystery...

This book is very bizarre. It is a murder mystery but it is also an occult book about practicing good witches and spells and channeling the dead and voodoo dolls and evil and murder. Hmmm, not normally my cup of tea BUT I have to say that I was really engrossed in this book.
There are three murders of teenagers, all missing their heads.
The homicide detective (Garrett) is skeptical when he's approached by a woman practicing white witchcraft. He has difficulty buying into her beliefs until the night she sneaks atropine into a glass of wine and he has visions that he's able to prove are true.
This book is wild and I found myself siding with the detective right to the very end. This is the same author who writes the Huntress/FBI series, which I love. This book is very different than that series but her writing style remains the same and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
R C Bray does a superb job narrating.
I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this book. If you found this review helpful please indicate so.

Just okay story for me, but great narration..

Hmmm… Not sure I liked this or not. It was a good mystery, but the killer never said a single word in English and the few words he did say were in a language that was summoning a demon. You never find out why he did what he did or what he was thinking or what he was going to do next. It was as if we just had a make-believe serial killer.

And Garrett was totally ridiculous sometimes. This was a paranormal story and Tanith was a powerful witch and no matter what she showed Garrett he just had an excuse not to believe, even when he saw the demon about to come through the mirror, he blamed it on being drug-induced. To the very end of the book he refused to believe.

There was sex in this book: once with Carolyn, and while he did the deed with her he thought of Tanith and then had sex with Tanith herself.

The F-bomb was used 43 times.

I listened to Ms. Sokoloff's Huntress/FBI series and they were all much better than this was. I'm so glad book #6 will be out soon.

As to the narration: R.C. Bray did a great job on the voices and emotions.
