About this listen

What if you went to a school where it was actually all right to be who you really are? That's the enchanting place David Levithan has created in his highly acclaimed first novel. But even if the gay kids and the straight kids all get along just fine, even if it's all right for the quarterback to be a cross dresser named Infinite Darlene and the cheerleaders to ride Harleys into the pep rally, the road to true love is still a strange and winding path, as Paul discovers when he meets the boy of his dreams. Charming, funny, delightful, and utterly heartwarming, this YA novel speaks with clarity and depth about our need to love and be loved.©2003 David Levithan (P)2005 Full Cast Audio Fiction Growing Up Growing Up & Facts of Life Literature & Fiction Young Adult Heartfelt Feel-Good Funny

Critic reviews

"In its blithe acceptance and celebration of human differences, this is arguably the most important gay novel since Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind." (Booklist)
"Levithan's prophecy of a hate-free world in which everyone loves without persecution makes this a provocative and important read for all young adults, gay or straight." (School Library Journal)

Very Entertaining

What did you love best about Boy Meets Boy?

Provided a view of the world as it could be if everyone were free to be who they are.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Paul because of the way he was always self adjusting yet accepting of who he is.

What does Nicholas Robideau and the Full Cast Family bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This was the 1st book I have listened to where each character had a differnt reader. Made for great listening. Really brought the story to life.

Any additional comments?

I bought this based on reviews because I was in a hurry to leave for a road trip and needed something to listen to. Being more than 30 years out of high school, I thought I would have no interest. This enlightened look at what the world could be without hate kept me glued to car stereo.

Delightful story

this is a cute story of how life and love should be for LGBTQ youth. I recommend that if you have an LGBTQ teen in your life get it for them.

Excellent presentation of a wonderful book!

I listen to a lot of audio books and I found this to be one of my favorites. The cast was truly amazing and the music transitions were perfect. Of course the book is a wonderful story and touched me deeply. Thank you Full Cast for bringing the book to life!

adorable

i loved this book, i just wanted to hug all the characters. i don't think there's anything wrong with imagining a world where the football stars and trannies get along. the tough reality of being a gay teen in some places is definitely still in there with one of the characters. and for the record, i'm a girl who went to prom with a girl and had no problems - this book is nowhere near total fantasy as implied by some reviewers.

A decent Vacation Read

As a 44 y/o gay man, I found this a pleasant, if somewhat juvenile fantasy. I guess if I were still a 15 y/o high school student, this might be instrumental to my escapism. In the 70's, when I was there, of course there was no such thing. If you're still trapped in Rural American and desperate for anything that's out there, this certainly fits the bill.

I bought it for the same reason that I buy my kids overpriced candy bars to send the Band to wherever -- it supports a good cause (in this case, gay fiction), and I want to see more of it especially on Audible.

It's a pleasant book to listen to, a "vacation read" that you can occasionally doze off during without missing much of the plot (at least, not so much that you're lost 20 minutes later). It's somewhat forgettable, though, in that I never invested in any of the characters or felt especially bonded to them.

In short, I probably won't ever listen to it again, but it was OK.

Boy Meets Boy Review

I really liked the way the book was written and the portrayal of the high school kids. I know it was a time of much angst, even more so now. However I believe this story has something to it in that live and let live way. Wouldn't life be grand if we could all practice the kind of love we preach?

Better books

It was cute. But it felt like a book written by a freshman for other freshmen. It read like an NPR podcast.

It’s a quick cute story that was filled with overly emotional high school characters. Read rainbow boys series. I did enjoy how it was read though. Adding in the music and what not.

Cute

The readers were a bit bland, but the story was very cute - very YA :) The story didn't tell about anything brutal, but the kid with parents who believe in his eternal damnation were horrible enough in their 'we love you, but ..." stupidity.
