About this listen

Why America's sons are underachieving, and what we can do about it.

Something is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, American boys are, on average, less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. The gender gap in college attendance and graduation rates has widened dramatically.

While Emily is working hard at school and getting A's, her brother Justin is goofing off. He's more concerned about getting to the next level in his videogame than about finishing his homework.

In Boys Adrift, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than 20 years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home. He shows how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that is literally toxic to boys. He also presents practical solutions, sharing strategies which educators have found effective in re-engaging these boys at school, as well as handy tips for parents about everything from homework, to videogames, to medication.

A must read for ALL parents.

This was one of the most insightful and light shedding books I have ever read! I am so thankful to Dr. Sax for bringing all of these issues to the forefront. It will impact how I parent my son for the rest of my life.

I listened just in time.

I have 4 kids. 2 boys (8 & 5) and 2 girls (3 & 1). My son has started playing Fortnite and really turning into a different child with it. I have now cut back to 45 mins 5 times a week. Tuesday’s and Thursdays are device free days. I am already seeing a huge change in him only 2 weeks later. My 5 yr old is in kindergarten and his teacher asked for him to be evaluated for ADHD. THANK GOD his pediatrician said he will not diagnose before 6 or he would be on medication. I am pulling him out of school for the rest of the year. We will be doing nature schooling and he can go to kindergarten next year when he is 6. I can’t thank you enough Dr.Sax for writing this book. Please share share share this book.

exceptional

This book has answered many of my questions and I feel more confident in growing up and becoming an adult. In terms of money worth, I put this book in the same tier as "hello habits."

US-centric, but insightful

US-centric, but insightful - most problems have significant (although different in degree) presence in other cultures.

Solid analysis

This book presented interesting solutions to the current issues faced in raising boys. I think anyone interacting with young boys would gain something by listening to or reading this book. That said, I was left with some questions regarding potential solutions for young men - those who are experiencing the issues in this book but have outgrown the solutions presented. There is also a nuance of individual personalities that may need to be taken into consideration, as with any book.

I really enjoyed the narrator. I haven’t listened to many audio books and he made this one captivating and interesting to listen to.
