About this listen

Why America's sons are underachieving, and what we can do about it.

Something is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, American boys are, on average, less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. The gender gap in college attendance and graduation rates has widened dramatically.

While Emily is working hard at school and getting A's, her brother Justin is goofing off. He's more concerned about getting to the next level in his videogame than about finishing his homework.

In Boys Adrift, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than 20 years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home. He shows how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that is literally toxic to boys. He also presents practical solutions, sharing strategies which educators have found effective in re-engaging these boys at school, as well as handy tips for parents about everything from homework, to videogames, to medication.

This book really hit home for me! I would definitely recommend this book to any parent whose child is already diagnosed with ADHD or thinks their child may have it.
This books brings a lot of things into perspective for me, as I am currently raising a ‘boy adrift’. Sax is able to educate his readers on 5 factors that boys face today and does it in a way that I think every parent can relate to.

Very Good!

Excellent in so many ways. I work with kids but don't have my own so I went into this book not being in the target demo (likely parents) but I learned so much about the type of society I want to help create for young men. I also have the urge to pass this on to anyone with young boys in their lives. I would absolutely recommend this.

A big time perspective shift. Great listen.

This is a book that should be read or listened to by anyone who has, works with or loves a boy. Very informative with doable ideas and solutions. Gives great hope to turn our boys and young men into productive, happy men, husbands and fathers.

Everyone should become acquainted with this information even if you think you already understand your roll as parents or teachers

Dr. Sax covers the topic in an engaging yet thorough manner, looking at the problem with a depth that was admirable. He does offer some suggestions on how to address these problems (I think the video game solutions seemed the most complete) yet he leaves it to his reader to come up with innovative solutions within a set of guidelines. He even takes pains to point out that there is no one size fits all approach to teaching boys and I would submit that this goes for parenting boys as well. I like the discussion of the topic and it kept me interested all the way to the end. As a parent of boys, I’m eager for solutions, but helping to understand the problem is step one in any solution, so thank you Dr. Sax.

Excellent coverage of the issues

This book is full of important information that I wish I had known before I had kids. This should be required reading for every parent of a boy.

A must read for parents

overall this is a very good listen, however if you read his other books it's likely entire sections are going to be basically repeats.

I'm also not totally convinced about the research on plastics, and I'm not convinced by the case he makes for the connection between them and ADHD.

but overall the advice in the book is good

Good, but a lot of repetition from his other books

This book is a must read for anyone who has boys, anyone working in the education system, social work profession, medical profession or anyone in the mental health profession. Dr. Sax is the man!! To me the book seems well put together, logical, research based, easy to understand and a good book over all. For what it is worth, I recommend it highly!

Totally awesome book

This is the 3rd book by Dr Sax I have read and he is right on the money. As parents and educators we need to wake up and see what is happening. We owe it to our boys to do better!

Important for the future of our boys
