OWEN

I learned early on to keep my expectations low. Somehow, I keep ending up disappointed anyway. Like now: I finally have an alpha, and I bet I could take him in a fight.

I’m no expert, but I don’t think that’s how that’s supposed to work.

Everything seemed good at first. Or as much as it was ever going to be, auctioned off to a strange alpha so I could pop out their litter. But hey, in this time of mysteriously low birth rates, we fertile omegas are a prized commodity - emphasis on the commodity. (No, I’m not bitter. Why do you ask?)

So hot rugged alphas came from all over to sniff me and tell me I’m pretty, my breeding price paid for my mom’s medical expenses, and no one cried at my farewell party. Or came. Whatever.

Then I found out my new alpha was a dud.

Seriously, are defective alphas a thing? Cuz I think mine’s broke. Sure, he sweats pure testosterone, he’s got muscles for days, and he can brood with the best of them. But instead of mindlessly ravishing me, he wants to take me on dates. Instead of thumping his chest with his beta bros, he reads to children. And with war breathing down our necks, he wants to…talk peace?

The weirdest thing is, I’m starting to see the appeal. Maybe the old ways aren’t always right. Maybe I can have more than just my duty to this strange alpha. Maybe I could have his love too.

Now just gotta keep from getting murdered....

DANTE

I was never supposed to be alpha. I’m not sure I was even supposed to be a wolf.

I was always too soft, too serious. Too busy dreaming of a calm, peaceful life surrounded by kids to boast about my conquests.

I know I’m not what Owen expects. I should be used to it, but it bothers me anyway. Even stepping up as alpha couldn’t get me to change who I was, and yet, I want to change for this snarky little omega I could break with my pinkie. Something about him makes me want to growl and mark my claim, til he looks at me with lust, want, need in his expressive eyes.

He brings out the beast in me, and its everything I never wanted to be.

But with murders and betrayal and war all around me, maybe it's what I need to be....

This tale of mixed up alphas and omegas is 50,000 words of action and mpreg all topped off with a HEA for listeners over 18!

Story Okay Narration Acceptable

An intriguing book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters interesting. The characters were developed and thought out. Dante and Owen are the MC’s of this book. The narration was by Bishop King who is a new narrator to me. The narrators voice didn’t work for me. Unfortunately, I am very picky about voices. I think that it could’ve worked better if he had different voices. He did the narration by reading the book and not with distinctly different voices for each character. He wasn’t monotone but didn’t have big highs and lows in the flow of the story and speech. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

These two were pretty hot together

3.5 stars. I absolutely loved the beginning of the story and watch these two grow to know each other and fall in love. I knew they were in love before they even admitted to themselves. Then the change came and Dante turned cold and angry. So instead of talking to Owen, he acts like an a&&. Then we find out what Lesander has been up to. So what is an alpha to do? Believe his bff? Anyway when we find out what he did, he got off way to easily. Exiling him was way too good. Dante should have killed him. I’m glad we got to see Owen and his mom patch things up and have a conversation. They book ended with the threat of war hanging over their heads so I hope there is going to be another book.

It has some issues, but it's enjoyable overall.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The story had a lot of potential, but the plot remains fairly superficial. Not a lot of suspense or in-depth character exploration. If there end up being more of this story-line, I'd hope for more carefully written plot lines. There are some very awkwardly written lines, and some of the dialogue seems painfully unnatural. I recall cringing once or twice while listening, but there are a lot of very good moments that almost make up for it.

Performance-wise, the narrator was fair. He was clear and easily understandable, but it was more of a recitation than a performance. The voices of both main characters sounded very similar, if not identical, so there are times that it's confusing who is speaking. There are very few "character voices," which was disappointing. There are some very good characters that I would love to have more distinct voices. In addition, there are several places where the audio suddenly changes, as though it's spliced together from different recording sessions. Not terribly noticeable, but enough that it throws you off for a moment.

As I said, the story is fairly predictable, even the so-called twist, but I enjoyed it well enough. I liked the twist on the "experienced/non-experienced partnership" and the characters are likable enough, but the world needs more exploration and explanation (there are things that aren't fleshed out about how the world works, the time period, or even the way the werewolf and human worlds coexist). It's a sweet, shorter story that has some issues, but I like it.

This book was okay

This story was not really for me. Owen has felt unloved and on the outside for so long but Dante gives him the chance at real happiness. Dante is not your typical alpha but can get the job done when it’s needed.

First the werewolves were much different in this story and that threw me off. There was just so much that didn’t line up quite for me and never connected with the characters.

Bishop King’s narration of this story was nice. Unfortunately I didn’t feel that his voices were consistent for the character throughout the story.

Yes!

This is the way LGBT romance should be written. It's got tension and emotion, it's fun and steamy, and it's original through and through. Loved every minute of it. The narrator's voice was nice too...good to have a guy that sounds manly. :)

Walker & Kingsley Deliver

I've been reading Walker and Kingsley for a while now, and I'm glad to see them coming to Audible. I think they chose a great narrator and the book was fantastic. Obviously, this isn't for everybody, so you have to know what you're getting into. This is gay romance and it's Mpreg (please look that up).

Five stars all around boys. Good job.

Interesting take on werewolves

I haven't read many books by Preston or Liam so this was an interesting book to listen to. I love how Dante won Owen just to have a chance and I love that Dante is a sweet alpha that really wants all the hearts and flowers. There were a couple of parts that I was surprised by (no spoilers) but there were a couple that I was able to figure out pretty quick. I thought the majority of the book was pretty good, though I admit I think there was too much that went on in the last 45 minutes or so and should have taken longer to get more details.

I wouldn't mind listening to more books by Preston and Liam in the future and look forward to discovering more about their werewolf world.

Poor alpha

Dante was such a disappointment as an alpha. He started out sweet and strong, then got lost in the undertow of a hateful jealous packmate , and he became a childish uncommunicative schmuck!!! Smh! Owen was trying to do everything he could to bond with Dante, and Dante fell for all Lysander's lies and tricks which separated them. Disappointed that Lysander wasn't dealt with properly!!! Red rage!!! Owen's unlikable cold hearted mom comes around to almost likeable after she's exiled from her pack! Karma much??? The narrator did a great job with voices and expressions. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this story and am giving an honest review.

enjoyed it

Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Were there any parts I found annoying: no - but I would have liked more world building (unless it's a lead in to a series)
Did I feel an emotional connection to the characters: little bit
Would I listen to it again: probably

Was a different spin on the usual mpreg/shifter story line which I enjoyed and would like more of. Pace moved along nicely, the characters are complex and the relationship takes time to build which was a nice change.

Bishop King is a new narrator for me, he did a good job bringing the characters to life and adding to the overall audio experience.

I would like to see more of this world.

Good Story

It's a good story that is a quick listen. I wasn't really captivated by the story but it is enjoyable. I like Owen and how he is a strong omega who is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of his pack. I wasn't impressed with Dante, I felt he was a bit too weak. The narrator did an ok job but at times it is difficult to differentiate between the two main character voices so you can't always tell who is speaking. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
