About this listen

Bestselling thriller writer Tess Harrow is almost at the end of her rope when she arrives with her teenage daughter at her grandfather's rustic cabin in the woods. She hopes this will be a time for them to heal and bond after Tess's recent divorce, but they've barely made it through the door when an explosion shakes the cabin. Suddenly it's raining fish guts and...is that a human arm?

Tess was hardly convincing Gertie that a summer without wi-fi and running water would be an adventure. Now she's thrust into a murder investigation, neighbors are saying they've spotted Bigfoot in the woods near her cabin, and the local sheriff is the spitting image of her character Detective Gabriel Gonzales—something he's less than thrilled about. With so much more than her daughter's summer plans at stake, it's up to Tess to solve this case before anyone else gets hurt.

Great start to this series!

This was a fun, witty, whodunit! I will admit it wasn't love at first sight but I'm glad I held on and continued. It was well worth it!

Wow!

I have pondered how to review this book without resorting to play by play or tedious character analysis. So here it is. It begins as a fairly typical cozy with a divorced mom trying to find a new start for herself and her teenage daughter in a home inherited from a relative in a small town in the PNW. That was the end of anything typical. Tessa is brilliant but never seems to turn her brain or her mouth off. Gertie is brilliant and has stereotypical teen angst. They and the other characters are each entertaining in their own way. Between the twists and turns of the story, the multitude of scenarios that play out in Tessa's author brain, and the almost chameleon-like characters, things can get a little confusing, if not overwhelming. At one point, I considered not finishing, but I am glad that I did. This was one adventurous ride, and I plan to stick around for the next one.

Caution: There are a few fairly gory scenes not typically found in a cozy. They are central to the story, but be aware.

Will continue in the series

Not the greatest mystery but still a fun ride. I will continue in the series to see how the characters continue to develop.

A question of taste

I can not criticize the five star reviews. With cozies, you either love them or read only one of the series. The writing style is good, the narration is well done, but the characters and the story were not amusing to me. i did not feel the laughter others did, but that is just me. I bought on sale so no regrets.
