Critic reviews

"As Burnt Offerings unfolds, Anita agrees to help track down a possible psychic firestarter. She's also policing the local werewolf pack, though she's split up with their alpha, Richard. Then Jean-Claude, the vampire Master of the City and her lover, needs her help to confront a visiting delegation of the vampires' ruling council. They wonder how he got the power to destroy a council member and believe him dangerous to the hierarchy." (Amazon.com review)

Anita continues to get more powerful. Now part of the triumvirate, she holds her own against members of the vampire council. Hamilton does a good job of scaling up the bad guys in line with Anita's abilities, so the danger level remains intense. The erotic shape-shifter stuff also ramps up a bit, but is not too annoying (yet).

I read this book years ago, but just had to buy the audible version and listen to it again! I don't know which book is my favorite, but probably the one where Anita finally starts to see Nathaniel as a man and lover. This one is awesome as well since this is the first time she meets him. I love seeing how their relationship changes through the series!

Still loving this series!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's a good book even if the Vampire Council members who are so hyped up to be powerful and ominous turn out to be petty and sadistic. I guess if you're an ancient vampire you need to get your kicks somehow but the vampires in this book made me roll my eyes.

Would you ever listen to anything by Laurell K. Hamilton again?

Probably not. This book was the beginning of the end for me. Richard was my favorite character and you start to see his steady decline.

Have you listened to any of Kimberly Alexis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. She does very well with the accents and giving each character a "voice"

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Vampires are Sadists

Vampire Council Members are Petty and Sadistic

I was hoping as I listened to these books that the narrator would improve on her pronunciations but sadly she still says several names horribly wrong or a word here and there. Otherwise it's great!

Also notice a few times she uses the same voice for different characters while they are talking to one another, I know she doesn't mean to, just figured that'd be something caught in post production or something.

Good but...

I love Anita Blake. It contains violence of a sexual nature. I couldn't finish it. It strongly recommend you listen with caution.
That being said, it is a good book despite Richard becoming a jerk. I used to be team Richard, but not after listening to this book again. I enjoy seeing Jean Claud's grow. Anita is just a static character. At least she takes responsibility for the current situation with Richard.

Caution, this book contains traumatic events

Great job. The music and accents were amazing. This series was the only one I have heard so far that went all out.

I love Anita Blake, she's always finding trouble, but somehow, amazingly enough she, finds a way to work through it, grown powers scare her but she keeps pressing on, love it...
