About this listen

Waverly Sloan is a down-on-his-luck lawyer. But just when he's about to hit rock bottom, he stumbles upon a business with the potential to solve all of his problems.

In Waverly's new line of work, he comes to the aid of people in desperate need of cash. But there's a catch. His clients must be terminally ill and willing to sign over rights to their life insurance policies before they can collect a dime. Waverly then finds investors eager to advance them thousands of dollars - including a hefty broker's fee for himself - in exchange for a significant return on their investment once the clients take their last breath.

The stakes get higher when Waverly brokers the policy of the cancer-stricken wife of Lawrence Erickson, a high-powered lawyer who's bucking to become the next U.S. Attorney General. When Waverly's clients start dying sooner than they should, both Waverly and Erickson - who has some skeletons of his own to hide - are unwittingly drawn into a perilous web of greed, blackmail, and murder.

Good Legal Thriller

Just came across this book because it sounded interesting. I needed to break out of a rut of reading the same dozen authors.

The characters seemed like real people I could identify with and since it was based in Los Angeles I knew so many of the references of places.

I learned a lot about buying insurance policies from dying patients which gave it an overall introspective to something I didn't even know existed. There are twists and turns and like some other review wrote a wonderful cross of Lisa Scottoline and Robert Crais.both of whose books and style I enjoy.

Easy to follow the characters which is a pet peeve of mine. If there are too many characters and you are not reading it all of the time you lose each back story. I was there with Angela and Dre the whole way. Not sure if they will make it however.

She has another book in the series coming which is next on my list.

R. C. Bray was outstanding with the delivery of the story

A Great Who Done It!

I really enjoyed the story with all the twists and turns. There are so many characters and the narrator does a good job of capturing each of them. This novel gave me hours of enjoyment. Can't wait to download the next book in this series. I will also be seeking out novels with this narrator. He is Good!

Good potential, but disappointing execution.

This is the first book by Young that I have read, but I was disappointed, especially given its high ratings. The topic of viatical settlements is a good one, with its obvious conflict of interest among those promoting such arrangements. Bray's narration is very good.

I can accept that the characters all have seriously flawed personalities, but they seemed to be extreme versions of themselves. The following may sound like spoilers, but it is all revealed within the first several chapters. It is very hard to believe that a strong, highly educated senior federal prosecutor like Angela would tolerate subjugation to a control freak like her fiance, Judge Waters. Then there is Waverly, an attorney with ethical issues and a selfish, demanding wife. There is Lawrence Erickson, the head of a distinguished legal firm with his own serious ethical issues and psychopathic personality disorders, as well as his loyal law partner, Becker, apparently willing to do anything to advance his own career. Finally, Dre's sudden turnaround from a drug dealer and felon to Angela's love-struck, noble suitor was matched only by her apparent naivte. Not surprisingly, the actual plot involving such characters is full of loopholes and incredible events, with a resolution involving obstruction of justice.

Wait a minute--I take it all back. Come to think of it, these sound like people in the daily headlines emanating from the Trump administration, if not The Donald himself!

A must read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to a friend and I have already.
It makes you imagine; 'what if this really happens."
This is one of the very few books I stayed up all night to listen to.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was realistic, not far fetched and the stories of the different families or people involved were cleaverly developed. You just want to keep on listening to find out how it will all end. The narrator did a great job!

Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favorite?

My favorite was the lawyer who changed jobs, I could not imagine how a transition like that could happen and how things would end for and his family.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There was no part that was not moving to me but the most moving part was when the pieces if the story was being put together.

Any additional comments?

This is a must read or should I say a must listen.

Great legal thriller!

Viatical settlements: arrangements whereby persons with a terminal illness sell their life insurance policies to third parties for less than their mature value in order to benefit from the proceeds while alive.

This novel is about abuse of viatical settlements. Pamela Samuels Young has written an outstanding legal, suspense, and action thriller. This is Book 1 in her Angela Evans series. I reviewed Book 2 earlier. This is the third Pamela Samuels Young legal thriller I have listened to and all have been great! I'll definitely listen to the rest of her books.

I tend to think of RC Bray as a science fiction novel narrator, but he also narrates thrillers. I've listened to many of the books he has narrated and his performances are ALWAYS 5 star.

Highly recommended!
