About this listen

Once a mother and her pre-teen son discover they’re both clinically incapable of paying attention, how will they stop bickering and move forward together?

“A story of love and persistence… Buzz will teach. charm, and bolster you.” (Edward Hallowell, MD, author of Driven to Destruction)

When Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Katherine Ellison and her 12-year-old son, Buzz, were both diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, they realized they had more than just an uphill battle ahead—they were facing a cliff.

Ellison, inquisitive, and driven by nature (even while grappling with the storm of ping-pong balls in her head), hunts down every possible approach to supporting a child with ADHD, from neurofeedback to nutritional supplements

Buzz will not only make you laugh out loud but also provides insights for parents seeking answers for how to provide the best help for their particular child.

What answers does an award-winning journalist track down when the story she’s investigating is her own parenting?

Listen to Buzz today to find out!

“Long after reading this smart and tender memoir, I am still rooting for Buzz.” (Kelly Corrigan, author of The Middle Place and Lift)

Listen, Laugh and Learn!

Katherine Ellison is a woman who doesn't shy from challenges. A Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and graduate of Stanford University, Ellison has traveled around the world digging up stories about everything from corrupt world leaders to global warming. But it was raising her eldest son, Buzz, who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at age 12, that brought her world to a sudden stop.

In Buzz, A Year of Paying Attention, Ellison, a journalist at heart, digs in to learn everything about ADHD so she can better understand her son and the challenges his diagnosis brings. Diagnosed with ADHD herself at the same time, the stream of conscious meanderings through her scattered thoughts will have anyone with ADHD nodding in concert and those without laughing out loud. Peppered with thoughtful research and consultation with experts, BUZZ takes you on a journey of a mother seeking to steer her son from the perils that untreated ADHD can bring, while trying to find the best treatment for him. In true ADHD style, Ellison leaves no stone unturned, even hoping to get an appointment with his holiness the Dalai Lama to see what his thoughts would be about using medication to treat ADHD. What results from the year is a changing of the lens through which Ellison views Buzz and his untethered energy and a closer relationship between mother and son who share the same neurodiversity of the ADHD brain.

Helen Hoffses, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Mom with ADHD and ADHD kids!

Relatable, Witty, and Insightful for All ADHDers and ADHD Supporters

The real-life stories Katherine Ellison shared about her and Buzz’s ADHD journey were funny, clever, and heartfelt all at the same time. 💕 Katherine shed light on the everyday struggles of both parents and kids with ADHD, which are invisible to those outside the family but vital for all to hear. I was driving and listening on Audible when I reached the end of her book. Buzz’s last words were so simple and true. As a person with ADHD, his words touched my heart so much that I started tearing up as I drove and listened to Katherine narrating with the perfect background music. It wasn’t a “sad cry” but a feel-good cry. ❤️ I also enjoyed how Katherine mixed their family stories with her investigative research about ADHD. She combined them effectively, so you don’t realize you’re listening to scientific research information. I love it! 🥰 I highly recommend this book for anyone newly diagnosed, with family members with ADHD, or who knows someone with ADHD. It’ll give you realistic perspectives of what it’s like to live with ADHD for families AND the possible solutions you can explore. Since Katherine and her son have tried many of the ADHD treatments themselves so they can share their experiences with us, you save time, money, and effort learning from her and Buzz. 💕
