About this listen

Miss Marianne Winchilsea is running for her life from those whom she believes have attempted to kill the king. Forced to disguise herself, she trusts no one - especially not Garett Lockwood, the Earl of Falkham, who usurped her family home and who seems to be her most dangerous enemy.

And what Garett sees behind her masquerade is a beautiful half-gypsy enrobed in mystery, deception, and burning secrets. A woman he should avoid at all costs. In a world where treachery and betrayal reign, a sweet seduction rules their hearts - and dares them to risk their destinies on a passionate love that all the powerful forces of the world cannot defeat.

There are several elements of this book that could be better. I had a hard time understanding the attraction between these two. I think not knowing their secrets/hidden agendas earlier in the story made it hard for me get into the story.
The author and narrator are both favorites but in this audio book I think they are not well matched. If you subscribe to Escape it’s worth the gamble. I would buy the book before purchasing the audio version.

It’s okay

This is one of those really good books that come along on occasion. strong independent women, a messed up good guy who needs female influence in his life, a seriously evil bad guy, a mystery, and a couple of sweet love stories, all work together in a well written story.

It works and it works well. This is one that goes into my listen-again library.

Really Terrific Book!

She's an idiot, but he's lovely. He makes up for her ridiculous lies and stupidity. I wish she had been a little less goody two shoes, but for what it was, it was good.

Another Ridiculously Stupid Heroine

This narrator is good. Once in a while she would say something In a cheery tone followed by “ she said coldly” or something like that. Overall fine performance for a great book that has a wonderful author.

I liked it!

The Story is melodramatic, narration is weak, and overall painful to listen to. The women were not very bright.

Don’t bother

Not surprising, considering this WAS written in the 1990s. But still... This feels dated enough that it made me cringe at times. Beyond outdated terminology (some of which I am genuinely uncomfortable quoting), this also relied on stereotypes to depict more than one ethnic group in ways I found questionable.

The romance of it all, the storyline between our two lead characters also has a lot of rape-y undertones. It just feels like the way society views certain concepts has shifted enough to make parts of this more icky than romantic. (Concepts like: power disparity, consent, date rape, victim-blaming, forced pregnancy risk.)

It's very 1990s - needs a hard edit.

I am usually a Sabrina Jeffries fans but this just did not do it for me. I gave up and could not finish it. I’ll go back to her newer works.

1) this story is set much earlier than more recent works - 1600s
2) the whole beginning is based on vengeance and assumptions
3) I feel like we missed something important pretty early in the story. It probably comes out later, but I don’t have the patience to wait.

Lackluster

This narrator did an awful job. The book was just barely okay. The heroine was one that you want to slap, A bit to whiny for my taste. I love Sabrina Jeffries, this is one of her older books where the H and H fight the attraction and feelings all the way to the end, which becomes annoying. I like her the more recent books better. I am currently READING her heiress series which have all be great so far. I am looking forward to starting the Hellions of Halstead series. These books are so much more entertaining and a lot less frustrating. I cant recommend this book unless its on sale for real cheap and you have nothing else to read/listen too.

Books just okay. Bad Narrator
