About this listen

A charming, delightful new regency romance series from author on the rise, Anna Bennett!

She needed a husband of convenience. She got her one true love instead....

Miss Fiona Hartley’s huge dowry should have ensured that finding a husband would be quick. True, she’s a tad older than the average debutante and spends too much time sketching brutally honest character portraits. She desperately needs a husband, so she can access her dowry, lest the man blackmailing her reveals a secret that would ruin her family. So desperate in fact, that she’s willing to do the unthinkable - propose marriage to the most surly, irritable gentleman in town....

As a matter of principle, David Gray, the Earl of Somerdale, avoids two types of women: those who are obviously desperate and those who are stark-raving mad. And it soundly appears Miss Fiona Hartley is both. Yet David can’t help but be drawn to her, and gives her a test - if she can spend one week in his dilapidated estate - the same one that caused his previous fianceé to jilt him - then he’ll consider her proposal. But as the week goes on, Fiona’s refreshing wit finds a way into his heart. What started out as a marriage of convenience has turned into love...but will Fiona have him for the rest of her days?

Very pleasant story and characters

... and the blackmail plot held my interest. I liked Grey and Fiona as a couple, they really worked and their love was gradual and palpable. Writing was smooth and narration was great.

Pretty good

The writing style was professional. I liked the premise of the story. it was original, and unlike many other storylines that involve a secret conflict, this one proves true to life even by today's standards of scandal or taboo parentage. I loved the scenery descriptions, especially of the crumbling manor home. I could picture every room.
All around, it was an ok book, but I never could warm to the FMC. Her personality felt all over the place. I also never felt the couple had a deep connection. There was nothing swoonworthy. The sexual intimacies were just another followed script of the same vanilla encounter. The supporting characters, aside from the grandmother were quite superfluous. Some were hardly even mentioned except tp be place holders. I wish that part had been better incorporated & meaningful to the story.
The narration was good, but I'm not a fan of the sing song voice used for the FMC. It was high pitched with a trace of smugness. I identify that voice with usually a female villain... that could be why I never warmed to the lead.
But Overall a worthwhile listen.

Fun twists

A bit too much sex but the story was well thought out. I kept thinking it was someone else who was the blackmailer so it was a complete surprise to me.

It was a good story

It involves secrets, blackmail, and family honor. That may make it sound like it was dark, but it wasn’t. I really appreciate that the author did eventually have the heroine communicate honestly with the hero,

Interesting Story

This story really held my interest even though I suspected who the villian was from the moment Fiona listed her suspects. Nevertheless, I continued to enjoy the story. The narration was good, really suited to the story. l plan to continue reading/listening to this series.

drags on

The idea sounds good, but the story drags on and on. Wish i could have returned it.

Not well developed.

The plot in this story is not well developed and neither are the characters. It is just silly.

To long

Way to long the thing that bothers me the most is the heroine is being blackmailed yet she forgets a journal and her drawings both of which have salacious content for the era. Doesn’t make sense when the character itself isn’t stupid
