About this listen
An Astra Militarum novel
Sent to the capital world of Potence, Sergeant Minka Lesk and the Cadian 101st discover that though Cadia may have fallen, their duty continues.
Listen to it because:
It's the follow-up to Cadia Stands and continues the journey of Minka Lesk and her warriors as they seek revenge against the Imperium's enemies for the loss of their world.
The story:
For 10,000 years, Cadia stood as a bastion against the daemonic tide spewing forth from the Eye of Terror. But now the Fortress World lies in ruins, its armies decimated in the wake of Abaddon the Despoiler and his Thirteenth Black Crusade.
Those who survived, though haunted by the loss of their beloved homeworld, remain bloodied and unbarred, fighting ruthlessly in the Emperor’s name. Amongst them is the indomitable Sergeant Minka Lesk. Sent to the capital world of Potence, Lesk and the Cadian 101st company soon discover that a rot runs through the very heart of the seemingly peaceful world.
Lesk knows she must excise this taint of Chaos, for it is not only her life and those of her company at stake but also the honour of Cadia itself.
Written by Justin D Hill. Narrated by Colleen Prendergast.

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

The scattered worlds of the Elara's Veil nebula were once protected by the oath of unity sworn by three mighty Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. The Star Scorpions were undone by flaws in their genetic coding. The Celestial Lions were ravaged by the Inquisition for sins they did not commit. Now, after hundreds of years, only the Emperor's Spears still keep their vigil. They are barbarian watchmen against the Outer Dark, bloodied but unbroken in their long duty.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HATE
Everyone here is saying that this book is woke garbage. It is not. There are at most 3 times where ‘woke’ can be applied. Things happen in this book where if there was a male pov character it would be all fine and dandy but when there’s a female pov character it is called feminist and woke. Great 40k book and I am going to read the book.

Not a Minka Lesk Novel
Its ok but Lesk is only in like 10% of the book and doesnt do much.
Also "small man" is used to describe 5 different characters and its just seems uninspired

Weaker than the last book
First act and final acts are very good, but the overall middling story likes to drone on a bit too much for my tastes. Good Guard novel.

Awesome read.
Honestly, I have no idea where the negativity for this book comes from. The first half of the book was pretty slow but it added so much context and lore to the world of 40k that I didn't know before. The latter half of it reminded me a lot of covert ops during war. It was incredibly exciting. Nothing like Cadia Stands, but it was still awesome.

scattered.
its the only word I can think to describe this as.
they add so many characters to help give you a complete view of the situation developing on planet. but that in turn makes it hard to follow the story somewhat. it's not a bad read but I did have to force myself to come back to it and keep going around the half way point. The last hour or two are where your attention gets grabbed but thats mostly because people start dying.

Another great Cadian epic!
Excellent narration by Prendergast in this one. An ever evolving plot that is somewhat unconventional but awesome. Def recommend.

great story poor narrator.
honestly the story is great, however I wholly regret listening to it ive never listened to a female narrator before so I gave her a fair shake. She barely tries to do different voices shes got 2 voices for men and 2 for women and thats it. and for some reason every single impression of a shout or yell is conveyed as a whisper which ripped me out of my immersion every single time she did it. this isnt to say she doesnt have any merits but the above crushed this book for me.
