About this listen

Healing others is killing her.

Kiema Feuer needs to disappear. Trapped by her parents so they can use her healing magic for their own purposes, Kiema is more prisoner than daughter. But when the cost of escape could mean her life, she's willing to risk everything to gain her freedom.

Her one chance at freedom pits her against the sexy as sin Ransom Kolefni, a man with plans - and magic - of his own. With her window of escape quickly closing, she's caught between following her heart or a slim chance of survival.

Will Kiema be able to trust the man who's brought her to life? Or will she long for the days of imprisonment?

Contains mature themes.

Had potential

Decent but I got the the last 2 hrs and couldn’t finish.. started to get annoying and then I realized where it was going when he said they shared women.. as a woman it’s degrading to me, but to each their own.. it’s just not for me.. I’m not really the sharing type

I Couldn’t Put It Down

I was entranced instantly from the moment the book started. This is my first Sadie Jacks book and I am impressed. Jeffrey and Heather are also great. The twang given to a few characters is a tad off, but it’s nothing that ruins the story while listening. I’m off to start book 2 now.

Caged Magic

Kiema Feuer has felt like a prisoner all her life. Her parents keep her locked up and only bring her out to perform healing magic in order to get rich for their own purposes. Kiema is very naïve because she's been sheltered from society for so long -

Enter Ransom Kolefni, there to be cured from a disease who has the means and opportunity to help Kiema escape, but if she fails the punishment will be worse than any escape attempt before. She doesn't know if she can trust Ransom and his team -

It took me a while to get into the story but once I did, I couldn't stop listening.

Good story!

I’m pretty happy with book one. Very engaging storyline. I adore heather costa’s narration, and the male narrator isn’t bad either. Super steamy love scenes, so definitely not a public listening experience. Looking forward to book two!

Engaging and Interesting Plot

This was my first time reading/listening to this author. I quite enjoyed the story as it was novel, and I prefer when authors drop the reader into the storyline without providing too many background details in the first chapter—it is more natural to provide enough context for the readers to figure things out as they read. I gave the book 4 stars because the plot could have been better by expanding the book and developing the story line more thoroughly. Some elements in the last hour felt rushed and under-developed. The romance was sweet with some spice but was also a bit hurried.

I think with another 150 to 200 pages of plot to address the development issues, the book would have been excellent.

disappointed

I'd give this 1.5 stars because there is the potential for things to improve. Right off the bat there is a serious lack of world-building. There are names of places, but zero explanation of where those places are - no state, province, country, region or even continent. NOTHING. There are also very few details about the land. There are vague and general descriptors about mountains or deserts, but readers don't even know if this novel takes place on the planet Earth or some other place entirely. (Update: about a third of the way through book 2, we learn this isn't Earth, and there are 2 suns and 27 hours in the day. OMG! Talk about things that should have been discussed earlier!!!!! Infuriating.) There were also plenty of editing errors to keep me riled.

So it's no surprise that the utterly ridiculous graphic sexual narration and scenes made me dislike these characters. Totally gratuitous, like the author really wanted to write erotica. For characters that had plenty of personal drama to be complex and substantial, they were shallow and flighty, following all the alpha shifter cliches of "mine" without having ANY info about the other person. I get sexual attraction, but Ransom's inner monologue was nearly all sex all the time, and she just goes with it when he makes his move. I also understand her wanting to take the opportunity that presents itself, but the whole "romance" just seems vapid and unrealistic. Kiema shifts between standing up for herself and letting him walk all over her. It doesn't work. There is no real connection or understanding between the two.

The plot is messy and unclear for most of the novel. Until OTIS is discussed, it seems like this is going to be one of those ho-hum romance novels that has NOTHING else besides the romance going on. Life isn't like that, and books that are like that are so far removed from reality that I cannot suspend my disbelief to read them.

I will read the next book to find out what happens to Kiema after the cliffhanger ending, but this series is on thin ice with me.

story is extremely messy

The story is extremely messy, but even worse, the narrators can't keep up with pronunciation. For instance, the guy named Ransom (spelling?) is called "random" multiple times. On every page there's at least one wrong pronunciation. Sometimes 5. It's seriously annoying. "Ky ky" also went from ky ky, to "ke ke" because the narrators are so bad. Heather Costa is usually really good but this is terrible. the dude is 1000x worse though.
