Publisher's summary

From author J. Todd Scott comes a haunting thriller about a young plane crash survivor and a mysterious hiker who venture into the wilderness to escape a dark and vengeful force.

A small white plane hurtles from the sky, vanishing into the wilderness. Hiker Maggie Roby watches its final descent, certain that no one could have survived.

But to her shock, a fifteen-year-old girl emerges from the wreckage, wounded but miraculously, impossibly alive. Maggie approaches with trepidation; she has secrets of her own, a past she can’t escape. Saving the girl means risking her future, but she can’t just abandon her, can she?

With the young survivor, Maggie embarks on a dangerous trek through the remote Appalachian backcountry, joining up with two veterans from the local sheriff’s department who know the land better than anyone.

But even as Maggie charts their course through the mountains, she can sense someone—or something—else watching and waiting.

Their journey is about more than enduring the elements. It’s about escaping a sinister presence that makes a vast wilderness feel like it’s closing in.

Critic reviews

“J. Todd Scott's Call the Dark is that rarest of things—a cross-genre thriller that is as original as it is entertaining. An equal mix of wilderness adventure, coming-of-age story, and supernatural chiller, this is a richly detailed, highly propulsive, and completely captivating book that will have you turning the pages late into the night. Don't miss this one!”—David Bell, New York Times bestselling author of Try Not to Breathe and She's Gone

Call The Tedious!

This tome has one very major problem... It never gets anywhere! On the run for their lives. Our hero's spend a vast majority of their escape sitting around the ol' campfire telling ghost stories and other BORING tales from their collective past! Where are the Editors...just when we need them most!

Good paranormal story

In the snowy West Virginia mountains a woman is on the run when she witnesses a plan crash and decides to help the lone survivor. In a twist of fate, they team up with the former and current sheriffs to escape the bad guys. They are also being hunted by something not quite human. Lots of twists and turns that keep you in the story’s grip.

Brilliant!

A thriller bolstered by its science fiction and supernatural elements. If it was a paperback, I'd have had trouble putting it down. Because I listen to my books in my car, I'd sit in front of my house after I'd get home from work and keep listening to this one!

Left with too many questions…

This was a very entertaining story and I was really hooked at the beginning…. until they were all running in the woods. Way too much -boring- time was spent here. I would’ve rather heard more about Luna and the whats and whys behind her story. What was up with her? And was Roach an experiment too? If he was the “white thing” Walden had previously talked about, how did that happen? How could Walden tell stories of the white things when Roach had yet to change -into what? And why?- What was his purpose in the experiment.
Ultimately, this could’ve been a much better story if those questions had been addressed.
