About this listen

Cecil McGee and Turner "Bubba" Teague return in their first full-length adventure! The cursed slacker rednecks were introduced in the pages of the horror collection, What Price Gory, in the story "Cecil and Bubba Meet a Succubus". In that tale, Cecil and Bubba accidentally killed the dog of Rosalita, a drunken gypsy. She cursed them:

"You shall be plagued by the strange and evil until the end of your days...."

Soon after that run-in, Cecil and Bubba hired onto a paranormal investigation of a local haunted house to earn some extra cash. During that investigation, the two discovered that Rosalita had not been just whistling Dixie! They ended up tangling with a nasty succubus and the boys barely escaped with their lives and souls.

In this follow-up novella, Cecil and Bubba spend what they think will be an uneventful Halloween night at McGee's Gas, Garage, and 24 Hour Convenience center, until they are joined by a new and unlikely ally. Soon after that, a pair of FBI agents brings a van in for emergency service work. The agents are hauling a weird cargo and Rosalita's curse soon causes an ancient evil to rise and walk the Earth once more. Cecil and Bubba find themselves not only fighting for their lives, but for the very planet as well. Can our two heroes prevail over the horror of THE THANG? Prepare yourself for a close encounter of the horrifying and hilarious kind!

Cecil and Bubba Meet the Thang features an introduction by Bram Stoker Award nominee Rena Mason!

I love these guys. And Gene Blake nails the tone.

If you could sum up Cecil & Bubba Meet the Thang in three words, what would they be?

Rednecks. Alien. Fun.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cecil. Of the two, he seems like he's marginally more responsible than his brother. He knows he's a lazy redneck and he owns it. This time, though, he steps up to the plate and does what needs to be done.

Have you listened to any of Gene Blake’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and just as I'd expected. Blake narrated West’s earlier collection of short stories, What Price Gory, and he did a fine job. With Cecil and Bubba, his choice of vocal style brings a special kind of humour that really brings out the absurdity of their situation. It works perfectly.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Standing between and ancient evil and world destruction are Cecil and Bubba. What?

Creepolicious Fun

Where does Cecil & Bubba Meet the Thang rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Terry M. West delivers a fast paced Cecil & Bubba Meet the Thang.

Get ready to hit your funny bone on a hard horror edge in book one of The Southern-Fried Hex Series.

Cecil and Bubba run over Rosalita’s dog.

Rosalita curses Cecil and Bubba, "You shall be plagued by the strange and evil until the end of your days.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

West writing is character driven. Take one Cecil, one Bubba, add an ex-succubus, stir the pot, then add an alien bent on destroying the world. Combined with Gene Blake’s narration it kept me listening until the story’s end.

Any additional comments?

I am ready for book two; Cecil & Bubba meet a Succubus.

Can anyone say tucker and dale meets supernatural?

What a hilariously hillbilly romp through the world of the supernatural. Movie cast would have to be tickler and dale they are exactly what I saw in my minds eye for the whole story. Couple of hillbillies are cursed to have their life invaded by the weird and evil. This is their 2nd encounter, the first was with a succubus. Now a evil world destroying alien entity has entered their lives along with two rogue FBI agents. Good luck to our boys Cecil and bubba. What Can I Say?

I was perusing and came across this audiobook. As soon as I read the title, I was like "I need this book!" I didn't read/listen to book 1 (hadn't realized there was a book 1), but that didn't deter any enjoyment I got out of this book. It was funny and very entertaining. 5 stars for the story itself. I can't say I've ever encountered a story like this.

Maybe I listen to too many books? I don't know. But when I heard the narrator speak, I really wanted to love him. Unfortunately, he's only getting a like from me. He did great red-neck-sounding voices BUT his consistency was majorly lacking! What do I mean? While he had different voices for the characters, I couldn't help but notice that after doing that character's dialogue, sometimes that character voice would continue with the narrative part of the story. And there wasn't a specific character this would happen with. It was all of them! It seemed to start with Reginald. Additionally, I ended up having speed up the audiobook (which I never have to do) as the narrator, to me, spoke slowly the majority of the time and then would randomly speed up. So because of that issue, which no one else seems to have noticed based on other reviews, the overall rating is less than, at least per my Goodreads rating.

Surprisingly entertaining

I had never heard of this series and usually don’t listen to a lot of comedic horror but it was actually really good and funny. Narrator did pretty good with characters too. Will definitely look out for more stories about Cecil and bubba. I was given this audio in exchange for honest review.

Great combination of horror and humor

If you could sum up Cecil & Bubba Meet the Thang in three words, what would they be?

entertaining, well-written, surprising

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cecil & Bubba Meet the Thang?

A dialogue between one of the main characters and his father. It was heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time!

What about Gene Blake’s performance did you like?

the versatility of his voice

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

Cecil And Bubba Meet The Thang is an excellent combination of horror and humor. I enjoyed following the misadventures of the colorful main characters, Cecil and Bubba. Terry West has a knack for creating interesting characters and very effective dialogue. There’s a lot going on in this novella and I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of genres (horror, comedy, sci-fi) and the range of emotions that the story was able to stir. The narrator did a great job in giving justice to the author’s work, so well done to both!

Fun 4th Encounter Story

This was a fun story, totally outrageous and made me happy for a few hours. This story is a continuation of the previous, however, I felt it stood well as a standalone story. Definitely missed some back story; however, the author provided enough to get you on your way with this tale. While the story itself is quite silly, the characters were good and fit perfectly within the plot. Not so much horror, but is definitely a crazy alien story.

Gene Blake did a great job narrating. I think he provided the voices needed for each character and really put me into the story. He put a lot of energy into his narration and I think that is what helped me to really enjoy the story.

Interesting

The story is well written and mostly funny. Not much horror but there is quite a bit of gore.

Love the performance by Gene Blake
