About this listen

A blockbuster new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lincoln Child, centered on a dominant tech company—Chrysalis—whose groundbreaking virtual reality technology is redefining the way we live...and possibly introducing a catastrophic danger to the world.

Like millions of people around the world, Jeremy Logan (famed enigmalogist, or investigator of unexplained things) has grown to rely on his incredible new tech device. Made by Chrysalis, the global multibillion dollar tech company, the small optical device connects people in a stunning new way, tapping into virtual reality for the first time on a wide scale.

And yet, when Logan is summoned by Chrysalis to investigate a disturbing anomaly in the massive new product rollout, Logan is shocked to see the true scope of the massive company. He also quickly realizes that something in Chrysalis’s technology is very wrong, and could be potentially devastating. The question is what, and where, is the danger coming from? In Lincoln Child’s wildly inventive new novel, high tech comes to life alongside the myriad dangers it poses, making for one of Child’s most infectious, entertaining thrillers to date.

Critic reviews

“Fans of this series will enjoy the extended romp with Logan and his demands for revelation; newcomers can relax into Lincoln Child’s lively narrative and marvel at how a little stretch of current technology can create a scary world of possibilities.”—New York Journal of Books

“As Child masterfully ratchets up the tension, he makes even secondary figures feel real enough for readers to worry about their survival prospects. Michael Crichton fans will find a lot to like.”Publishers Weekly

“…It’s what happens along the way that makes the [book] so enjoyable: the false leads, blind alleys, and bad assumptions; the slow accumulation of facts that points to a solution that cannot possibly be true—except that it must be. An intriguing, suspenseful, and very satisfying thriller.”Booklist

Jeremy Logan returns

This latest Jeremy Logan thriller has him hired by a cutting edge tech firm that is pushing the limits of virtual reality to new frontiers. Jeremy has faced ancient puzzles and lost technology before, but never has he stepped this far toward the future. As with all of these stories, the technology is only very slightly beyond what we have today. I honestly expect something similar to be a reality within the next decade. Hopefully without the story required intrigues and associated deaths. The author paints, what I am convinced is a pretty accurate view of what we can expect.

I have seen other reviews that stated that they were overwhelmed by the technology described and had some difficulty following the story. I didn't have that issue and, while some was a bit beyond my technical expertise, I found the gist of what was going on to be very clear and understandable.

There is some bad language, but within reasonable amounts. No sex. A fair amount of violence, but less than one might expect from a thriller. The deaths are treated appropriately and not as simple cannon fodder as many other thrillers do. There is a gravitas to the lives lost which, in the hands of this very capable writer, are made to mean something.

I honestly believe this book to be the best in the series so far. I highly recommend it.

PS... Unlike many series, you can enjoy this one as a stand alone without having to have read the previous books. But then, you would miss out on those great stories.

A little hard to follow

Good story, but a little hard to follow. The change in subject from time to time was a little confusing.

A Mystery with a glimpse of our future!

I was grabbed right from the beginning of this book, and it held me in its grasp right up to the shocking finish! Is there projects out there that resemble Chrysalis being developed as we go through our everyday life? Lincoln Child has given life to a future that may or may not happen (though I’m leaning more towards it coming to fruition), and Johnathan McClain narrates a story that will keep you guessing what will happen next. I’m a fan of Child’s works, and Chrysalis stands strong as a prime example of his creative mind! I would love to see this made into a movie some day. I know movies never truly capture all that the book entails, but this would be an amazing showpiece to a director’s career if handled properly! The only question would be who could handle the role of Dr Jeremy Logan?

Complicated Interesting Story

I found the virtual reality based technology interesting although the ending with software manipulation struck me as rather silly. Still it was well performed and written with some unexpected moves.

Lincoln Child's imagination

Just as I anticipated from one of my favorite authors. Highly technical, but yet "dumb-downed" somewhat so the less technology handicap can appreciate.
