About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Reignite your purpose in Christ, restore your dignity, heal your pain, transform your rest, and learn how to flourish in today’s secular world as a Black Christian woman—from Bible teacher, speaker, and psychotherapist Dr. Sarita Lyons.

“Masterfully intertwines the narratives of Scripture with the lived experiences of Black women, addressing with great wisdom the challenges we face.”—Lisa Fields, CEO of Jude 3 Project and author of When Faith Disappoints

Black women are the hidden figures in the church. Despite at times being rendered invisible, uninvited, and unprotected in a racist and sexist world, they are valued image-bearers and influential instruments in God’s redemptive plan.

Church Girl invites you, as a Black woman, on a journey from the garden to the present day. Your unique story as a Black woman lies within the grand narrative of Scripture, and the message of the gospel is the light, lens, and love you need to help you see and live as God intends.

Church Girl helps answer some of your most internal pressing questions:

• How do I understand my identity in light of Scripture?
• How should I think about my purpose?
• How can I thrive despite the opposition from racism and sexism?
• How are Black women hurt in the church and how can I heal?
• Why am I always exhausted from working and where can I find real peace and rest?
• How can I flourish in a secular world and live out my faith with conviction and integrity?

With compassion and wisdom, Dr. Sarita Lyons invites Black women to tackle the unique issues they face in the church with prophetic boldness, priestly compassion, a church leader’s wisdom, a counselor's insight, and a sister's relatability and love.

Critic reviews

“A profound and necessary beacon of light for Black Christian women navigating the complexities of faith. . . . Every page is a step toward healing, dignity, and a rediscovered purpose. Church Girl is an essential read.”—Lisa Fields, CEO of Jude 3 Project and author of When Faith Disappoints

Church Girl is a tour de force and the master class we didn’t know we needed. Dr. Lyons isn’t afraid to be countercultural or politically incorrect but is unashamedly biblical when it comes to showing God’s aim for women. . . .”—Dr. Eric Mason, pastor of Epiphany Fellowship Church and author of Urban Apologetics

“In Church Girl, Dr. Sarita Lyons tackles, head-on, the dilemma today’s Black Christian woman finds herself in as she navigates her relationship with herself, God, and the church. This book is full of Godly revelation and insight that I want to chew on for years to come. Church Girl holds keys to identity that every Black woman needs in her pocketbook.”—Naomi Raine, award-winning gospel artist

I loved the stories shared that resonated with me and my life. The experience of the love and hurt we find in the church. Absolutely loved the reminders of the Black Church covered in the Epilogue. It brought back great memories of being raised in the Black Church where we were respected encouraged and loved. Thank you for sharing.

I appreciated much of what Dr. Sarita Lyons shared in this book. Her humility, transparency, and true love for not just the black Church girl, but The Church girl, was evident in the pages of this book and also in her soothing voice that emanated from the audio version. Moreover, her passion for the Lord is an example to all women!

Transparent and Passionate

Thank you, Dr.Lyons for encouraging the church girl to remain steadfast even through difficult seasons and reminding us how the black church was instrumental in the spiritual journey of many. Anyone who has left the faith, thinking about leaving or even those in a good season should read this book. Christians that are not exposed to black culture or the black church would very much enjoy this read and also and gain a nonjudgmental insight. I recommended it even before I finished the book!

Encouraging and Insightful
