Jackie Hill Perry
If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news. Here, we will see that God is not like us. He is different. He is holy. And that’s exactly what makes him trustworthy. As it turns out, God being “holier than thou” is actually the best news in the world, and it’s the key to trusting him.

Not so with “Holier Than Thou”. Perry really is a poet. You could flip to a random page of this book, point blindly at the page, and lift an earth shattering quote that casts old ideas in fresh ways. She is passionate, but her logic and reason resound most strongly quoting everyone from C. S. Lewis and R. C. Sproul to Tony Evans.
Even in the Introduction, Perry floors the reader with perception and wit. She strikes hard on the jaded chord, the unsaid instinct that, if we turn our back, we will be Cain’s next Abel. God’s holiness should be the strongest argument for his trustworthiness, so why do we transfer our distrust of people to God?
She marches systematically through proofs of God’s holiness and its implications, but she didn’t really return to the question of why people seem to lose trust in God. Don’t get me wrong. I agreed with her and found much of the content to be encouraging, I just didn’t feel that she addressed this concern with adequate gusto or emphasis. I would like to read it again. I may have missed this emphasis in all her imagery.
Didn’t address the issues I hoped it would, but it’s still excellent

This, is beautiful. The way Jackie strings word together until they become poetry, crashing truths into your heart, word after word echoing after as the next ones ring is incredible. If you want to be reminded what it means when God says, He is holy, holy, holy, listen. We cannot fully know, in this life what that means, but I am thankful for the ways that God opens the hearts and the minds of those He has gifted in writing and in words, like RC Sproul and Jackie Hill Perry to speak about things and as weapons to open our eyes a little further about Who our God is.
God, is Holy.
