About this listen

Iron Man and Captain America are two core members of the Avengers, the world's greatest superhero team. But when a tragic battle blows a hole in the city of Stamford, killing hundreds of people, the US government demands that all superheroes unmask and register their powers. To Tony Stark - Iron Man - it's a regrettable but necessary step. To Captain America, it's an unbearable assault on civil liberties.

This GraphicAudio® Production is adapted from the graphic novel by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.

Very engaging and fun, but prefer movie

I knew the 2016 Marvel Civil War movie was based on a comic run and listening to this audiobook is the closest I've ever come to that original source material. This is a far more expanded universe with many, many more characters than were featured in the movie including the Fantastic Four, The Young Avengers and the X-Men. This audiobook focuses far more on the details of the Hero Registration Act, the positions of numerous characters and on the actual morals, whereas the movie more simplifies it down to the problem with Bucky Barnes. On the one hand getting into the details of a far more expanded world feels very interesting and gratifying, but for a non-comic person I was disappointed with the ending not really offering a resolution or a truce, and the sheer vast amount of characters became overwhelming. The movie was able to provide an acceptable resolution by making the core of the film about Bucky, but here, it is entirely vague as to what exactly happens to the vast majority of those characters and no real middle ground has been reached by the end. In the movie I felt the argument was a little more well balanced with both sides being right in their own way without either becoming villainous, whereas in this audiobook, even though Cap does kind of lose his way a bit, Tony Stark and Maria Hill are most definitely mesnt to be portrayed as facist villains. The audiobook ultimately felt incomplete by the end, with Cap learning a much more valuable lesson than Tony.

Sue Storm was definitely the character who stole the show with her devastatingly tragic and personal character arc, with Spider-Man a close second. Their voice performances are by far the most intense and engaging. Cap's voice actor performed well but seemed very miscast. All the others were suitable.

I also wish far more attention had been given to both the Tigra and Hawkeye subplots, as their actions seemed very out of character.

(Spoiler)
Also, the fake Thor seemed especially ludicrous and unnecessary, and very obviously was there to serve as an instrument to bring about the one noteworthy hero casualty without directly getting blood on the hands of an actual functioning character. I think it would have been far more interesting had an individual with a moral compass caused the accidental death.

I highly recommend this regardless. It was an especially fun listen.

Better than the movie!

Great listen to keep you entertained. Characters that all go together perfectly. The movie really missed out on the use of the fantastic 4. Hopefully we get something like this soon.

I had my doubts about "audio" comics but it's great!

They really went the extra mile. Each character narrated by different actors and actresses. Each giving a performance that brings forth a personality to each character. A good balance of narrative script and character dialogue. I tried this after liking the audio version of secret wars. I've read the actual comics and which made this experience better I'm sure. But the secret wars one, I've never read and I still enjoyed the audio book very much. I hope they come out with many more.

Great book!!!

I don’t often write reviews but I need to say this. I LOVED that each character had their own person reading their lines!!! Audible should do this for ALL their fictional books with multiple characters in them.

Top notch

Graphic Audio delivered another top quality recording. Sound design and production are superb. The story is updated but remains faithful to the comics. Excellent rendering of this story arc.
