Publisher's summary

Piloting a shuttle through a deadly solar flare, Jean Grey saves the X-Men, but is possessed by one of the universe's most powerful forces - the Phoenix. As she adapts to her new powers, the mutant team launches an assault against the clandestine organization known as the Hellfire Club. Once inside, however, Jean is tricked by the villain Mastermind into betraying her teammates. She becomes first the Hellfire Club's Black Queen and then Dark Phoenix, as the power to destroy worlds bursts forth uncontrolled.

Shooting into deep space, Jean destroys an entire star system, then encounters a cruiser piloted by the spacefaring race the Shi'ar. When the cruiser is obliterated, the Shi'ar queen decrees that the Phoenix must die. But only the X-Men can hope to stop Dark Phoenix and save Jean Grey.

Stays True To The Story!

At least the one I read years ago. I've heard that there have been many versions of this story over the years. This version was based on a book I read some time ago. The only part I didn't remember was the first act. But what follows was in that story. If you're a Marvel of an X-Men fan you'll most likely enjoy this.

A favorite story of mine since I was a child.

Who doesn’t love Jean Grey? She’s smart, brave, heroic and selfless. The story begins with her planning to pilot a space craft. She sacrifices herself to rescue her friends, her mentor and lover. The stories epilogue grabs you and takes you on a roller coaster ride as Jean is transformed into life incarnate, the Phoenix. Don’t delay you won’t want to miss this story.

the comic is probably better

I've never read the comics, but i feel like the story might not have translated well to an audio book. I heard that this was one of the best X-men story lines from the comics.

If you are a fan of the comics, you will be happy

For any fans who were disappointed by the two failed attempts to make a Dark Phoenix movie, this audio book does a good job of telling the story and can fill the void until Marvel tries to make a third Dark Phoenix movie.

the narrator was the only struggle. didn't like her character voicing but if you can get past that the story was great.

Incredible adaptation!

This audio book had the nearly-impossible task of adapting one of the greatest story arcs in comics. in my opinion, it exceeded my expectations, and even improved on the original text in a few ways.

Enjoyed overall, with one big caveat

If your first exposure to the X-Men was the MCU, you’ll be fine.
On the other hand if you’re an OG reader from when these comics were first published, a warning. They decided to set everything in the current day, and I found references to things like cell phones and the internet jarring. These were published 50+ years ago, decades before these things were around.
Other than that, they did a good job.

FUN READ

THIS STORY IS A MORE MODERN TAKE ON THE DARK PHOENIX SAGA FROM THE 80/90S, THIS VERSION OF THE STORY HAS BETTER CHARACTER GROWTH THAN ITS 90S COUNTER PART. IF YOU READ THE COMICS OR SAW THE 90S CARTOONS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS NOVELISATION.
HAPPY READING
