About this listen
How to steer your business through times of financial distress and achieve sustained profitability
Corporate Turnaround Artistry is a complete guide for entrepreneurial companies in times of financial distress - presenting effective strategies and proven methods to revive and rehabilitate your business. Uncertain economic times have significantly altered the financial resources available to struggling businesses. Narrowing margins and mounting internal and external pressure has taken their toll on many companies. Fortunately, most businesses can be repaired while maintaining their existing revenue structure. Offering practical steps that go beyond simple cost-cutting and sales-building advice, this invaluable guide teaches you how to control cash, secure financial relief, and develop a comprehensive turnaround plan that your employees, customers, and creditors will support.
Business leaders and entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of assuming new debt when tough times strike. Author and certified turnaround practitioner Jeff Sands shows that to many struggling businesses, more money is no longer the answer to the problem. Expert advice on topics including cashflow stabilization, short and long-term profit sustainability, lean management techniques, and more, provides the framework to timely and efficient corporate turnaround.

Years ago, after suffering a humiliatingly large dumb tax, it dawned on me that I have a seemingly unlimited ability to hit unforced errors and sabotage my business and financial success. I suspect you do, too. It turns out that the key to getting rich (and staying that way) is to avoid doing stupid things. I don't need to do more smart things. I just need to make fewer dumb mistakes. The vast majority of our dumb tax is a direct result of emotional, overly optimistic, and poorly thought out decisions.

Story
In The Outsiders, you'll learn the traits and methods striking for their consistency and relentless rationality that helped these unique leaders achieve such exceptional performance. Humble, unassuming, and often frugal, these "outsiders" shunned Wall Street and the press, and shied away from the hottest new management trends. Instead, they shared specific traits that put them and the companies they led on winning trajectories: a laser-sharp focus on per share value as opposed to earnings or sales growth; an exceptional talent for allocating capital and human resources; and the belief that cash flow, not reported earnings, determines a company's long-term value.

The story of its final, brutal collapse in the autumn of 2008, and its controversial sale to JPMorgan Chase, is an astonishing account of how one bank lost itself to greed and mismanagement, and how the entire financial industry - and even the entire country - lost its way as well. But the vast majority of fast-growing companies never take any venture capital. So where does the money come from to start and grow their companies?

A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Comprehensive as a textbook and compelling as fiction
I picked up this book out of curiosity to see how it corresponded to my ten years in turnaround / performance improvement and my thirty plus years in manufacturing management. While the listening was enjoyable and informative, I have resolved to buy the book for my tablet so I can annotate. Jeff Sands distills his broad experience into comprehensive checklists of what to do and how to do it.
I recommend this book to anyone in a position of responsibility for a company facing a crisis of liquidity.

Solid information, I definitely recommend!
Solid information and delivery that was also entertaining. Aside from listing the consumption of pork rinds as a bad habit. Clearly mentioning such things is a sin of error. All jokes aside I really enjoyed this books layout and presentation and I wish there were more books speaking to the subject. Very fascinating concept.

Useful, great stories, sharp and hands-on
This is part how-to, with some (useful) theory, some pep-talk, some business memoir, and some self-promotion. This might sound scattered, but it is not. It is coherent, as it zig-zags among these ingredients. It ends up being being very useful in many ways, fitting the trials of a troubled company. I like this author, particularly as he opens with admission of harsh learning experiences, which honed his craft, rather than the endless self-aggrandizement I find so off-putting. I like that he stares into the abyss without sugar-coating, and has things to say about coping with that. This guy knows stress and tough stretches from the inside out. But he has a practical eye too, and steps through problems all along the way. His own story is a comeback story. And he knows his way around an income statement and balance sheet (and some crucial labor and tax regulations). This is served up with top-rank, real business stories, full of dicey trade-offs and the tough moments of handling people and situations. I think the book improved as it went on. I am very pleased with it, and I haven't found another like it.
