Publisher's summary

Prepare to become your own worst enemy.

Commander Rhona Long understands survival better than most. Killed in combat by a malevolent artificial intelligence, she was brought back to life using her DNA, and she’s forged a new, even more powerful identity. Now the leader of the resistance, she’s determined to ensure the machines are shut down for good.

But victory is elusive. The machines have a new technology designed to overcome humanity’s most advanced weaponry. Despite Rhona’s peacekeeping efforts, former nations are feuding over resources as old power struggles resurface. Worse, someone inside the resistance is sabotaging the human cause - someone who, from all appearances, seems to be Rhona...or her exact replica.

Jump into the heart-stopping sequel to Machinations as reincarnated insurgent Rhona Long faces off against the one enemy she can’t outwit: herself.

Liked the middle of this middle book

“It feels like I’m a juggling act, except I don’t know how to juggle and the balls are actually grenades,
and all the grenades are actually missing their pins, and they’re on fire.”
The first half was spent building the pressure, on Rhona herself and on the remnants of humanity.
I liked getting to know the small cast of regulars, but still found this half to be a lot of filler.

“Empty meat.”
Then it started to cook.
The clone quandries got hella interesting and dark and twisty in all the best comic book ways.

“Uh oh, I know that look …”
Rhona: “Why does everyone keep naming my looks?”
And then, unfortunately, it went back to filler and blah, blah angsty-teen romance.
Still sex free, but there was at least one F bomb.

“One last question. How much self control did it take to not quote Terminator just now?”
Great middle and last hour … but fair warning that this is an Empire Strikes Back middle book.
