About this listen

For one small-town lawyer, the defense of a client could be his undoing at the hands of another…

In the latest twist of fate, defense attorney Sam Johnstone confronts a formidable challenge: defending a renowned surgeon accused of domestic battery against her estranged husband, who happens to be a local attorney. This seemingly straightforward misdemeanor case spirals into a complex murder trial, where Sam must show his client acted in self-defense. But the courtroom isn't his only battleground.

Sam finds himself in a difficult situation when a former lover, obsessed with him, directs threatening attention towards him and his client. He faces a tough choice: striving for success in the courtroom or focusing on safety outside of it.

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author James Chandler comes the seventh book in the Sam Johnstone legal thriller series. This thriller is perfect for fans of John Grisham, James Patterson, and C.J. Box.

My least favorite book of Chandler’s. I have read them all. This one was a lot of blah blah blah i.e. explaining the court proceedings, legal terms, and repeating of witness statements and qualifications just to fill the pages And it was very predictable. It’s time for Sam John Stone to move on.

Disappointing.

I have liked all of the books in the series up until this one (4 stars all around), being ruined at the end. I still liked the legal and police procedural aspects, and while I do enjoy the familiarity of the recurring characters, it has been clear to this point that many of the exact same quips are used throughout the series.
The female characters are almost all written to be whiny and needy, if not conniving.
Separately, the way the narrator does women’s voices makes them all sound the same. SPOILER ALERT:

Seriously? So many women become crazy stalkers over this guy? It has become a little ridiculous.

Seriously?

I appreciate the consistency of this author as I have read/listened to all of his published novels. The characterizations are well done, and his light legal information isn’t overwhelming. The plot line at the end of this book had me losing my suspension of disbelief, but the book overall did what I wanted which was to pull me in.

Pretty Good Book

The mystery as murderer murderer

This is a really entertaining and informative murder trial novel that informs about the results of a hung jury and what seems to be the eventual justice that will be afforded to a client who thinks she has outwitted the results of a course of conduct where she assumes she has bettered the system.

Client failed to learn course of conduct justice
