About this listen

Original score by Danny Schade

Welcome to Wheel: a perfect world without poverty, disease, or want. Tinkered and tuned in every way for maximum order by Rank and Spoke, every child knows her destiny - so long as she can take the neural implant.

The defective, whose bodies reject the implants, do not exist. Ghosts. Cyphers. Haunting the edges of society, living on scraps, killed for sport. A lucky few, the Crudrats, scrape out a perilous living cleaning the toxic wastes from the great machines that power the station.

Meet Maura. Cypher. Crudrat. Grown too tall, alone in a spaceport with no use for her, doomed to starve. With only her crud-eating murmel and an alien monster to help her, she must find a way to survive, or escape, before they catch her and blow what's left of her life, and her companions, into space.

From the pen of Gail Carriger, ArtisticWhispers Productions presents an unabridged full-cast young-adult adventure that brings golden age-style science-fiction into the 21st century, stuffs it full of heart and gives it a finely polished, gleaming edge.

I particularly loved her Boarding School and Parasol Protectorate stories, but this one was much different. I thought it well worth buying.

Love this author!

I have been a fan of Gail Carriger since discovering the parasol protectorate, so didn't think twice about trying this audiobook. Although the full cast approach took some getting used to, it was a really enjoyable experience, and another fantastic story by this author. Please, please, please write a sequel soon!

Unexpectedly brilliant

I enjoy most of this author's work. I gave this a try. The story is excellent. It's a world easy to visualize. The characters are great. A good space adventure.

Excellent

I loved how this book was read. the story is also fantastic. But a whole cast reading a book is my new favorite way to listen to one.

wish more books would do this.

This was my second or third time listening and again I am reminded of Anne McCaffrey's writing. Higher praise I cannot give. Ms. Carriger has shared that another story in this universe may be next up in her writing schedule. I dearly hope the wait isn't too much longer; I know it will be worth the wait!

I desperately need more books in this universe!

I love this author. I have read all of her other series. I especially enjoyed this new story and look forward to the next in the series.

Discarded by society, resourceful and plucky Mara uses her wits and quick reflexes to navigate her environment on the space station she was born on. She is a bit guarded, but honorable in her dealings with others.
Narration is fantastic, the sound effects and quick pace had me watching the movie in my minds eye! Can’t wait for the next installment. Though I could imagine this story spanning many books, it apparently only has one more book. I wish it was a whole series! I could see this adventure as the start and wonder what her adult life will bring, as she befriends a variety of different characters in her journey.

Exciting adventures of an unwanted girl

I cannot honestly say enough positive things about this book. The only downside is that there is only one of them! (Although I do understand that it’s a completely different voice for the inimitable Miss Carriger, so it’s hard to inhabit that headspace.) if you’re looking for an incredible sci-fi adventure, this is your book. Gail writes with a creativity and originality that borders on astounding in all of her work, but this one is my favorite. It’s a full cast recording, so if you’re not used to that it does take a little while to get into that cadence. This book is also a major departure from her Finishing school and parasol protectorate series, so if you’re looking for steampunk this isn’t that. If you’re looking for more in the same universe, 5th Gender does take place there, but it is an *explicit* romance (but also of the same high quality plot line). Read this book - it is WELL worth your time.

This book is incredible

Arg! I need the next one to come out. This is a fascinating world with a great set of characters. The MC has a nice, pragmatic outlook on life that I find refreshing. She isn't lamenting her lot in life or angry about everything. Instead, she accepts that some things are terrible, and works to make her little corner better for herself, and then hopes to improve the lot of her friends. Her goals are realistic and often simple. And while she easily accepts her own flaws and lacking, it is interesting to watch those around her fail to have the same introspection.

Love the worldbuilding
