About this listen

Narrated by the wonderful Emma Newman, this is Gail Carriger's first steampunk lesbian romance featuring a maid bent on seducing a brilliant cross-dressing scientist who's too brokenhearted to notice. Or is she?

Imogene Hale is a lowly parlor maid with a soul-crushing secret. Seeking solace, she takes work at a local hive, only to fall desperately in love with the amazing lady inventor the vampires are keeping in the potting shed. Genevieve Lefoux is heartsick, lonely, and French. With culture, class, and the lady herself set against the match, can Imogene and her duster overcome all odds and win Genevieve's heart, or will the vampires suck both of them dry?

This is a stand-alone LBGTQ sweet romance set in Gail Carriger's Parasolverse, full of class prejudice, elusive equations, and paranormal creatures taking tea.

Delicate sensibilities? This story contains women pleasing women and ladies who know what they want and pursue it, sometimes in exquisite detail.

Supernatural Society novellas can be consumed in any order. Look for surprise appearances from popular characters and the occasional strategic application of cognac.

Entirely delightful f/f romance!

I love the way this author does romance. Intriguing characters, quirky and vivid turns of phrase (I particularly enjoyed "gertuding"), humor, and just enough detail in danger or dishabille to titillate and make the heart pound.

I am most pleased that my favorite hat making inventor finally has someone to love her properly. If you're already a fan of the other books in this universe then you will probably enjoy this bit of dandelion fluff quite as much as the rest. You'll definitely feel more warmly disposed toward a certain wicker chicken.

Warning: do not read if a couple ladies getting naked and lovingly frisky with each other makes you uncomfortable. Gail Carriger has many other books of a more heteronormative and less descriptive bent, if that's your fancy.

The Inventor and the Maid

There are other things in life besides octopuses, even if they can destroy London.

A wonderful love story for inventor Genevieve Lefoux, finally. What is it about a French Maid's outfit that drives partners wild?

Hooray for Madame Lefoux

Finally, Madame Lefoux has the opportunity for happiness. The story touches on Genevieve and Alexia’s relationship, how Woolsey Castle fared under the vampires overseeing, and introduces another wonderfully strong but not one dimensional character. It was rather fun to play “find the character” as several former denizens of Carriger’s novels make appearances. Anyone who loved the original Soulless series and is open to the many forms of love will enjoy the book.

Top 5 Favorite

This story spoke to me on a personal level due to my own perverted nature. I cry every time I listen to it and I never get tired of listening or crying. I love every part of this beautiful, tortured romance with every fiber of my being.

Adorable

I love this story. It's so sweet and silly and charming that I almost overlook the narrator changing the pronunciation of many of the names of characters that appear an Gail Carriger's other works.

A sweet light romance

This lovely story of a woman discovering confidence in herself, her identity and her love. The author intwined her supernatural world beautifully, with new views on some characters we love. The performance was perfect and well executed.

why the echoes?

I didn't like the decision to make imogens thoughts sound so echoey. distracting and unnecessary.

Such a sweet love story!

I adore this book! I love how the romance is developed. I love how we get to hear the inner thoughts of Imogen as she tries to woo Madame Lefoux. I live the little cameo appearances by Alexia and the rest of the werewolf pack! Just a delightful, delightful book, with just about the best closing line EVER!! ❤️❤️❤️
