Publisher's summary

An old world killer is back. The race is on to stop a catastrophic pandemic.

After an exchange student with bubonic plague turns up in a Reno hospital, a contractor with identical symptoms dies in Los Angeles.

The government‘s official stance is that the cases are isolated and the outbreak is under control. But George Mack, a 30-year public health veteran, quickly realizes this is no ordinary plague. The death toll is too high, and the spread pattern make no sense. As Reno’s hospitals fill with plague victims, Mack begins to believe that there is more to the epidemic than the CDC is letting on - and that he must take drastic steps if he hopes to save his city.

Medical resident Dr. Susan Barry just wants to finish her training and get a real job. But when plague patients start showing up in her Los Angeles hospital, her plans for the future suddenly go off the rails. Faced with a growing crisis, Susan teams up with an old research mentor to determine the unthinkable: Is the rapidly spreading plague an act of bioterrorism? Racing against the clock, Susan must also confront another disturbing possibility. She may be one of the plague’s few survivors.

In eastern Oregon, John Harr makes a pact with his fellow ranchers to keep the “California” plague out of the high desert where they live. Using roadblocks and quarantine, Harr and his neighbors think they’ve secured their home - until a mysterious and heavily armed convoy comes to town, and Harr must use training from his past life in the military to protect the people he loves.

Great 1st Book

Thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to listening to the next one in the trilogy when it is published. With so many characters, it was sometimes difficult to keep them all straight. But don't worry, many of them die off from the pandemic. Great pace and development of the story. Narrator was very good, but sometimes I had to back up when I realized the narrator hadn't paused long enough when the chapter changed to another character and place. Definitely worth the credit.

Pretty Good

Started off a little slow and there were too many characters at the beginning but picked up midway.

Is it the best PA book ever? No.
Is it in the top 10? No....I'll give it a place in my top 40 though.
Worth a listen though and I am going to get the second book when it comes out.

The reason I took off a star for both the story and overall categories was because the author decided to give the respiratory type disease in this book the nickname "Drips" (or "Dripps" maybe, not sure since I listened to it and didn't see the text.

If it was meant as a shout out to The Stand's "Captain Trips", I didn't read it that way but found it unoriginal and was a little annoyed at it. But the Stand is one of my favorite post apocalyptic books ever, so it could have just been me being too critical.

Overall, good book and I do recommend it if you're into the genre.

Wow well done!

I was pleasantly surprised. This was a very good story well thought out without a lot of pointless filler. Yet some how character development was done so that you really felt empathy for this large cast of characters. My one criticism would be the transition between the different story Arch's was a lytl hard to follow and I sometimes felt lost. if this is Scheuring's first book I was truly impressed and will be on the lookout for more.

I couldn’t stop!

I couldn’t put it down- fascinated by how the author interweaved the various characters. How true natures came through….
I can’t wait for the second one!

Quality Book

Not just another boiler plate money maker, this story has depth, the author is good and obviously did some research.

Well done

A post apocalyptic happy time. Not! I enjoyed (if you can say that) the inside look at the possibility of a pandemic not as nice as Covid…
