About this listen

A sudden burst of radiation is detected beneath the desert in Iran. Alex Hunter – code name Arcadian – and his highly trained incursion team are dropped into the ruins of Persepolis. All they find is an empty underground facility – nothing to explain the gamma spike. It is as if a black hole has swept everything away....

Israel is threatening nuclear war. And someone, or something, is draining the fluids from the bodies of Iranian soldiers in the desert. If a black hole has taken everything, could something have come back? And then another radiation 'event' occurs. An ancient prophecy is unraveling.

A fantastic adventure!

I read the first book in the series several years ago and always meant to get back to see what happened next. It took me longer than it should have, but I'm glad I finally picked the series back up. I recall enjoying book #1. Dark Rising was outstanding with strong character development and a great plot. In a way I'm glad I lollygagged on this series because it means there are now more books to catch up on.

not as good as the last but I love the charecters

I found the one before this to be much better but I do still love the characters. Overall it does keep you hooked from time to time. I'm still going to get the next one in hopes it picks back up.

Interesting concept

This book had an interesting premise but to me there was a lot of time spent on slowly drawn out traveling and filler. I would have loved more details of the actual experiments and the things beyond. The narration was good and I look forward to reading the next book.

Author flattens plot

Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Rising to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print version.

Have you listened to any of Sean Mangan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Love Sean Mangan's work

Any additional comments?

Please, much as I like and have listen to the authors work, his comments at the start of the story gave away the basic plot line ! It's deflating knowing whats going to happen.

Please! No more author spoilers at the start of stories !

Clicky-clack mind rending silent scream + a suck

If Alex becomes any more Super, I don't know how the author will keep him within the pages of the book! And I don't want Alex popping out of the pages and hitting me with his powerful kick!

I think the monster from this book, from the other side of a black hole, is related to the monster living under the ice in book one - well, they both click and clatter and are ginormous and have reaching tentacles/limbs; one mimics you and then sucks you dry, the other skips the mimic part and gets right down to sucking your juicies.

There is a bit of a plot here though - stopping the BAD extremists from, SURPRISE, the middle east. The monster is just a side serving of excitement, not the main course (though it does take up a lot of story space). The main course is stopping extremists from plunging the world inside out through a black hole in order to a) corner the market on power generation and b) suck the world inside out through a black hole. Yes, yes, b) kinda eliminates the need for a), but this is fiction after all.

Over all, it is fast paced and reasonably believable. I think it might be just a bit better than book one, because the plot seemed to make more sense (well, assuming you believe humans can/would try to create a black hole). Compared to book 1: Story is more believable, Alex is less believable, the monster is the same believable. Solid 3 in the action adventure genre. Narration is fine (skip the authors intro at the start - it will just annoy you). Not much gore or swearing and no sex.

slow burn

loved the narration but the book is slow and anticlimactic. Not as good as the first book.
