Publisher's summary

Nia Washington is an incredible ballerina. She fought her way up from the streets and was nearing the pinnacle of her profession when an injury and a broken heart derailed her career. Taking a temporary job at an elite boarding school in Connecticut was supposed to give her time to nurse both body and soul. It was supposed to be a safe place to launch a triumphant comeback. It is anything but.

Shortly after she arrives at the beautiful lakeside campus, she discovers the body of a murdered student, and her life takes a truly dark turn. It's not long before she is drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with a ruthless killer. And Nia isn't the only target. She must use all of her street smarts to protect her dancers, save a wrongfully accused student, and rescue the man she loves.

A stunning and suspenseful tale of passion and betrayal, Cate Holahan's Dark Turns will take listeners deep into the mind of a murderer and the woman who must put an end to the killing.

Critic reviews

"Holahan nails the preppy ambience, the cliques, the conspicuous consumption, and the coltish beauties such as golden girl Aubrey Byrne...[in] this Black Swan pas de deux with Tartt's The Secret History." ( Publishers Weekly)

Entertaining but a bit predictable

I loved the use of ballet positions to frame each chapter. It was plenty entertaining I was only disappointed that I pretty much new the villain by half way through and that is atypical or me. I don’t try to solve mysteries I enjoy the journey.

Great read!

I enjoy how each chapter starts with a ballet term that is a peak into a chapter! Well done!

Another good read

I loved the story.. the only thing that I thought odd was when Obrea told Nea that she sent her a surprise y would she send it to Peter’s phone? How would obrea know Nea would get the sex tape of her & Peter. Peter would never have let Nea see it..That’s y I rated it lower on performance..

Boring story accentuated by annoying narrator

Wow! This was rough, and I’m usually pretty easy to please with my books. The narrator made this boring story a nightmare to get through.

the narrator's voice set the tone for annoyance

The story is lackluster, lacks depth, lacks a true reasoning for being drug around in circles. The tale from an african american perspective is poorly represented as I have yet to meet a black woman who will say she has a stereotypical black ass. Black women are aware of a muscular genetic makeup many lack, including other black women. There is never a reference to a stereotypical flat, sunken, square hipped, elongated ass when describing a white woman.

The author presented the main character mousey and weak. I didn't like it.

NOT A FAN

I have to return this. I usually listen on my commute to and from work. I found the narrator's voice so monotonous it was putting me to sleep and the story just never seemed to get going. I got through a third of the book and I had to give up.
