About this listen

In a chilling blend of folk horror and twisting suspense, this modern masterpiece depicts isolation and dread within a small island community.

There's something in the water...

On the edge of the Northern Atlantic lies a remote island. The islanders are an outwardly harmonious community—but all have their own secrets, some much darker than others. And when a strange disorder begins to infect them all, those secrets come to light.

Ferry service fails and contact with the mainland is lost. Rumors begin to swirl as a temporary inconvenience grows into nightmarish ordeal. The fabric of the once tight-knit island is unnervingly torn apart—and whatever the cause, the question soon stops being how or why it happened, but who, if anyone, will survive.

Started Well

I am not a fan of the horror genre. I'm not sure why I purchased this story.

The first third was wonderful, weaving between modern and ancient people and their respective stories. However, since horror isn't my favorite genre, I was less enthusiastic about the rest of the tale.

Creepy story

I agree with other reviews who said it was too long and has some unimaginative aspects of the story. After all, most horror /supernatural stories have characters who do stupid things. That said, I did enjoy the atmosphere and did get some chills from it. Siobhan Redmond's reading was well done.

the building up of character ls

there was alot that was hard to understand and the parts that were in between chapters? when was that why did the curse actually happen ? the ending could have been better. was that sig husband at the end ? why did some character ls like Walter John get infected then seem to become half normal again then infected again. I was a more difficult read for a contemporary book with all the Scottish terms. it was very foos though and scary but also had funny parts with Jamie and Malc. I wish it explained a littler more detail at the end.

loved it

I loved the introduction, I really felt like I got to know the characters. When the action began it was creepy and unique. The narrator was amazing as well. My only disappointment was that there were a couple of chapters near the end that were cut off. I don't know how much was removed, but it was a bit distracting. Otherwise, great book.

Disappointing

After A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World I expected more than a supernatural horror tale. This novel is Maeve Binchy’s version of Night of the Living Dead.

Just Ok, Not as good as Fletcher’s other book.

At first I wasn’t sure about the reader’s performance, by the end I loved her. The book is ho-hum. It’s too much like the walking dead to have much impact. One of my favorite books is Fletchers “A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World”. This was a bit disappointing, but not without entertainment merit.

slow burn but a warmth worth waiting for

the character development was great, I love the way he wrote about the dream states and there were just enough moments with the annoying characters to keep you on the edge of your seat and not cursing the story. I like the book, it was worth the money and apparently the only vegetation on the island is heather...

Major let-down

Not what I had hoped for a much-awaited second novel. A Boy and His Dog is one of my favorite books of all time, and I struggled to finish this.
