About this listen

Commissar Ciaphas Cain is a renowned and revered hero of the Imperium, a man who has faced and survived some of the vilest creatures the universe can throw at him. But when he is sent to a river-world, he must deal with a dangerous enemy, an enemy whose true identity remains unknown. As his vessel traverses the straits of the planet, Cain must uncover the face of this new foe so that he can understand and escape it. Caught in the enemy crossfire, the commissar has no place to run and his nerve will be tested to the very limits.

If you like Cain I highly suggest this.

If you love Warhammer stories that don't take themselves too seriously I recommend this. This is not Cain's best story but is a good way to burn some time and get more backstory for Cain.

Fine story but different cast

It is obvious if you read the story info, but this is not the same narrator as the other Cain novels. The story and performance are fine, but it is not the same humor and experience as the mainline novels have.

everyone sounds wrong

none has the same voice as in the actual audio books...
also the effects are slightly too loud to make the dialogue easily distinguishable

Bring out the rest of the stories ASAP!

My favorite Commisar. The narrator(s) really bring the stories to life. I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out.

Cain is Cain once again

Not bad. The voice actor sounds like he would make an exception Emperor Palpatine comfortably

I'm a Huge Fan

Sandy Mitchell always writes Cain really well, and I enjoy his stories a lot. this story just felt a bit too short.

Warhammer's most Heroic Coward!

I had stared at the Cain audiodramas for a few years before finally buying one. I love the Warhammer setting and I have to say I loved this story. Cain is a lazy self serving coward, but he's smart enough to know that sometimes it's in one's self interest to do what has to be done. It's just that he'll try every other option first. In a way it reminds me of Churchill's quote about America. And even though he tries everything to avoid it, when the chips are down, he is the hero people think he is. This tale starts with a bit of a mystery- some missing soldiers. And Cain reluctantly leading the search for them. His self serving style often catches people off guard, since they expect the more selfless hero. But he gets the job done. I loved the story so much I purchased his other audiodrama and his first three novels on Kindle and have already started on the third.

Sandy Mitchel gives another solid story.

Another fun and adventurous Cain story that once again makes him an unwilling hero. I enjoyed my listen to this story.

short but sweet

Ciaphas Cain: The boys want to be him, the girls want to meet him. If you like Commisar Cain you'll enjoy this short story. Excellent narration too, although he isn't the usual narrator and so Jurgen's voice doesn't stand out as much. The Ciaphas Cain books are the least dark of the Warhammer universe and are a great introduction to it. worth a listen
