Publisher's summary

Kauai, Hawaii - tropical paradise, vibrant jungle, turquoise sea...and sensuous nights that hide vampires so powerful they can change the world.

Raphael - powerful, extraordinary, arrogant. He’s been eliminating rivals and gathering allies, determined not just to survive, but to demolish the Europeans who think they can steal what he’s worked for centuries to create. In a final bid to avert a war that seems inevitable, Raphael agrees to meet an enemy he knows of old. She is formidable, wily, and not to be trusted. But in his arrogance, Raphael believes he can foil whatever treachery she has brewing.

Cynthia Leighton - Raphael’s human mate, beautiful, smart, and deadly when threatened. She doesn’t trust anyone, much less a powerful vampire claiming to want peace. So while Raphael prepares to negotiate a treaty, Cyn is preparing for the inevitable double-cross that she knows is coming. Raphael worries about saving thousands of vampire lives. She only cares about one, and she will do anything to keep him alive and in her arms.

When Cyn is proven right, when it all falls apart and Raphael’s enemies draw on ancient magic to trap him, taking him away from Cyn and out of the war, it all falls to her - to find Raphael, to save the thousands of vampires who will die if she doesn’t succeed...and to kill every single being, human or vampire, who gets in her way.

D. B. Reynolds is the RT award-winning author of the popular Vampires in America series of paranormal romance/urban fantasy, and an Emmy-nominated television sound editor. She lives with her husband of many years in a flammable canyon near Los Angeles.

loved it!

This series has captivated me since the first book and this one is just awesome. The characters are strong, well developed, and their connections add a richness to the story of Rapheal and Cynthia. Its fast paced and so well written I couldn't put it down. Russo does a great job with all voice ranges, accents and nuiances of the characters interplay. Can's wait for next book!!!

what a deception

Quite a story and with a twist, the human saves her vampire mate, the strongest lord in North America at that. I loved the story but the fact that Raphael allowed himself to be captured and how, is a bit difficult to believe. But then again even vampires can't shed all human traits and loved how Cyn proves yet again, that nobody should mess with her. Elka cracked me up with her sass.

I enjoyed listening to Mr. Russo's voice, so versatile, especially loved the ones he gave to the Japanese twins. He can really pull off the Alpha male growl SIGH

Great series!

This one may be my favorite. I've enjoyed all of the characters so far, but can't get enough of Cyn and Rafael. Anxious to hear the rest of the series. Hope she releases audio versions soon.

War! Old Vs New

This is my second book in this Vampires of America Series having only recently discovered this really talented author and this wonderful world created by her when I listened to Vincent a book which totally blew me away - well this book I have to tell you was every bit as good but totally different.

In this story, we deal mainly with a coming war between the "Old Vampire Lords" of Europe who feel it is their due to take what Raphael a much younger but no less powerful vampire has built in America. He is the senior member of a powerful alliance and together with his human mate Cynthia Leighton, the pair are formidable. The old lords band together and attempt their coup these are really old and powerful vamps who have no intention of playing by the rules, rather they intend to bend them to achieve this takeover.

The old guard has not done their research well, they do not realize the power Raphael has, nor do they realize just what lengths Cyn will go to save him should the need arise. So whilst Raphael is planning for his meeting with the European Vampires Cyn is planning her own coup/rescue just in case and she will go to any lengths to protect her love. When the terms of the meeting are violated and Raphael is down it is up to Cyn to work her magic aided by her team consisting of two vampires and one human. Along the way, they enlist the help of a few others including Nick and old lover of Cyn's and a local police detective who forms a bond with one of her team.

When it comes down to the wire Raphael's orders and Cyns plan are put in place and I admit I was on the edge of my seat whilst the action was unfolding. This was an exciting, totally enthralling and engrossing book. I did not want to stop listening to it and I resented any time I had to stop listening.

I would love to tell you more but that would involve too many spoilers and I won't do that so all I can add is that the narration of this wonderful book by Nick J. Russo was just perfect, it could not have been improved upon and the end of the book left the door open for so much more excitement to come. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

I was given a copy of this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing this review which contains only my personal opinions.

Slow start but good finish

Story - This book seems to be a pivotal book in the story arc, but initially I found it difficult to get into. I would have liked to see a little more development in the Cyn/Raphael relationship, beyond how much they continue to be indispensable to each other. Ultimately, the pacing improved and it had a satisfying ending.

Narration - Nick Russo made a number of errors in his pronunciation that repeatedly jerked me out of the story because they were simply that annoying. Specifically, his pronunciation of Kaua'i. He pronounces it (29 separate times) "Ka-why-hee." The right pronunciation of Kaua`i, is similar to pronouncing the sounds 'cow-wa-ee' with the 'cow' and the 'wa' flowing together and a glottal stop before pronouncing the 'ee,' which is why the okina is included. Some islanders pronounce Kaua`i as 'cow-eye' with an accent on the second syllable. Either way, Mr. Russo adds an "h" sound that simply does not belong.

🌻Love the series, the narration, not so much🙁🌻

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻V from Kansas 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

The story itself, was similar in pattern, to the previous books. I had listened to the Stone warriors series, first, so I enjoyed the tie in of Nick, to this series. My only complaint, during this entire series, has been the lack of true emotion, from the narrator. His performance hasn’t been bad, it just hasn’t been as expressive as a performance from Jim Frangione; for example.

I’ve already been downloading the final available book, from Audible and am looking forward to it but also mourning the end. There just hasn’t been any good paranormal series, released, in a long time. All the new releases are poor, unoriginal attempts. In addition, it seems like most of the new books released become shorter and shorter😭!

Missed Rapheal and Cyn!

Definitely back to what this series was all about so happy to be taking a turn for the better. I felt a little lost in this series when Duncan came out written differently and with a new narrator. Took me quite some time to get through that book and to continue on. They started getting better so I stayed with the series. Thank you for getting back to the series I loved before Duncan came out. I also missed Cyn and Raphael and what a shocker to see Nick as well. Won't say more so not to spoil. There was one thing that really drove me crazy is that they kept calling Elka, Elky. I am not sure if this was an oversight or trying to give her a nickname but Elka is unique enough just seemed like a mistake to me and I wanted to correct them every time it was used.
