Adam (Hayes) quickly finds himself as the guardian of his 7 year old niece, Flora, the daughter of his older brother that's now in prison. He needs to focus on hockey this year so trying to find a nanny for Flora has put a damper in his plans. Since Hayes is far from domestic, he takes Flora to a local bakery for a breakfast donut every morning. As luck would have it, the bakery owner has a daughter, Quinn, that needs a job.
Quinn is viewed by her family as "flighty," to put it kindly. She can't keep a job, stay in school, or commit to anything. Quinn really isn't flighty, she just hasn't found something she's passionate about just yet. When her mom offers her up as a nanny for an NHL hockey player, with a payout that'll help her with her debt, she decides to go for it.
There were so many times I got teary eyed while reading this book, and while listening to it. I felt everyone's emotions. I'm not usually a fan of kids being written into a story. They tend to come off as spoiled for the times they are on page. Flora's character was far from that. The part of this book that will forever stick with me:
Rory grins. "…as an animal doctor, sometimes people bring me pets they don't want any more or can't take care of."
"That's what happened to me," Flora whispers.
If that doesn't bring tears to your eyes, I don't know what would. Flora deserves her happily ever after. Adam and Quinn get their happily ever after and together provide one for Flora.
Love all three characters in this book
