Twenty-seven years is a long time unless you are trying to save the world. Nick was enjoying a late fall day, happily skipping his English class, when he was interrupted by a little silver ball. A ball that not only spoke, but claimed to be an alien artificial intelligence sent to warn humanity that a xenophobic alien race was on its way to wipe out every man, woman, and child on the Earth. Every year, the empire administers the rite of passage into adulthood. That rite serves to identify those blessed by Aether to become magi. The new magi are shipped to the academy to learn the arts of magic. The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

Quicker is a near-future SciFi/Thriller whose young heroine, Ell Donsaii, is an intrepid athletic phenom who reminds one of David Weber's Honor Harrington. Like Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Ell is also a mathematical genius who, instead of counting sheep, works on her own theory of quantum mechanics to help her drift off to sleep. At once shy and concerned about her social skills, yet well loved by those around her, she finds herself at the center of a terrorist plot at the Olympics.

People love easily. Look at most of your relatives or coworkers. How lovable are they? Really? Yet most have mates and children. The vast majority are still invited to family gatherings and their relatives will speak to them. Many have pets to which they are devoted. Some even call them their fur-babies. Is your dog or cat or parakeet property or family? Not in law but in your heart? Can a pet really love you back? Or is it a different affection? Are you not kind to those who feed and shelter you? But what if your dog could talk back? Would your cat speak to you kindly?

Story
It's been eighty years since Thorn split his people into six societies spread across the galaxy. He's known all that time a timeline shift was coming, and the role he needed to play when it did. The mages of his world are ready, including his great-great nephew, Bud. For Bud, living in the shadow of his legend relative hasn't really been an issue, and his role in the timeline shift is supposed to be minor. But Kali has an agenda, magic has its own agenda, and since Thorn is old, and tired of his people's reliance on him, he too has an agenda.

A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Good story, but…
Good story but an awful performance. I liked the ebook version but the audio didn’t do the script justice. Monotonous and difficult listening. Uninspired and sounds like someone reading a dictionary. I never liked this narrator but this is the worst so far.

Fix the narration by speeding up to x 1.2
Not a bad story line. It's much better when sped up.
It's fun to imagine along with the story plot. Of course everything always works out but hey why not? ( lol those words just played as I wrote that.)

Good idea, not great writing and sexist
The premises is cool. Its a fun series if you can look past the terrible flaws. The writing and performance are still not very good. And the story is written very sexist. It highlights that women are smarter then men and portrays men as baffon sexist ass holes quite often. There are men like that in real life but besides some of the core group of men from previous books it seems most new male characters and there just to show how men are sexist male assholes and physically and mentally infioroe to women. Even through the female roommate of the main character objectives men in the exact way women do not like, every chance she gets. Even the established male core group of characters are portrayed as baffonish, sure they are good guys who are capable but they get portrayed as baffonish and in need of a woman to handle them many times. Where as women are never portrayed like that in this series.
Also the tiwns are dumb characters. and the princesses is still the ultimate mugguffen ever.
that along with poor writing and performance shows this book is lucky to get 2 stars
I still think it is a high s probability the author is actually female.
