About this listen

Robert Crais, author of the Edgar Award-nominated L.A. Requiem is a master of the intelligent and complex suspense novel.

In Demolition Angel, he delves into the life-on-the-edge world of the Los Angeles bomb squad. Three years ago, Carol Starkey was one of L.A.'s best bomb squad technicians. Then, a freak accident while disarming a bomb left her scarred inside and out. Now a Detective-2 with the LAPD’s Criminal Conspiracy Section, she is struggling to rebuild her shattered world. When an explosion claims the life of a technician who was a colleague and friend, Carol is assigned to head up the investigation.

With the help of an ATF agent, she discovers that a brilliant madman is designing bombs intended to kill the people whose job it is to disarm them. But as they begin their chase of the man known as Mr. Red, Carol finds that nothing about the case is as it appears. All she knows for certain is that she is the next target. With finely drawn characters and non-stop suspense, Demolition Angel is an unforgettable experience. Paul Hecht deftly conveys both Carol's determination and fear as she fights to reclaim her life.

Suspenseful. These aren't just characters, they are people you know when the story is over. Paul Hecht was the right choice to bring the gritty business to life. I listened pretty much straight through. I'm a fan of H

Fast-paced and great story. A different writing style with deeply flawed characters whom you can’t help but root for.

Great thriller

Would you listen to Demolition Angel again? Why?

No, but a good listen. The Watchman and LA Requiem I do re listen. Carol has so much better dialogue and wit in the Last Detective and Chasing Darkness, with best reader James Daniel

What was one of the most memorable moments of Demolition Angel?

When Jack goes to the rescue.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Must use new 1.25x speed to match author's intent. Reader gets his groove by chapter 4 or 5

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes as this was author's earlier great writing. No it doesn't have the humor in the later books.

Any additional comments?

Get L A Requiem and use 1.25x speed to get real appreciation of Ron Mclarty great read! Same with 1st rule read by author. I re listen The First Rule at 1.25x speed and I wish I could alter my original review. Crais did a good job!

The only thing missing was a woman’s voice instead of a mans for Starkey - I would’ve liked that even more. It was a really good listen ;)

I loved this book and hope for more Carol Starkey books to listen to. My only complaint is that I think a woman narrator would be better to tell a woman's story.

Great Book

I have read and listened (paper & audio) to all of Robert Crais' books - several of them more than once.. He is one of my favorite writers of crime fiction. He's in the top three beside Connelly and Sanford. But this book was not up to his high standards. This audiobook could probably have been improved with a different narrator. Demolition Angel is not a bad book; it's just not what I was expecting from Crais.Maybe If I had read it before I had read all of the other Crais books, I might have felt differently. The Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series is fantastic. His other stand alone novels are also great. The "Two Minute Rule" and "Suspect" are amazing examples. . This one just did not compare. It's worth a read, though. Just don't expect too much.

Just OK

This is just plain, old fashioned…. THRILLING!!!! Okay, Paul Hecht doesn't even try to do female voices. FUGEDABOUDIT! This thing is perfectly designed to entertain till almost the last tick of the clock…. LITERALLY! Totally liked it. Recommend it. A blast from beginning to end.

WOW! I mean…. W.O.W.!!!!!!!
